Psalm 86

1A Prayer of David. Bow down thine ear, O Jehovah, and answer me; For I am poor and needy.

1A Prayer of David. Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.

Commentary · verse 1

David made his prayer to God during his time of need. He specifically asked God to hear and answer him.

2Preserve my soul; for I am godly: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

3Be merciful unto me, O Lord; For unto thee do I cry all the day long.

2Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

3Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.

Commentary · verses 2-3

David asked for mercy, for God's judgment to be postponed.

4Rejoice the soul of thy servant; For unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

5For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in lovingkindness unto all them that call upon thee.

4Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

5For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

Commentary · verses 4-5

God was Good: Right and Just.

6Give ear, O Jehovah, unto my prayer; And hearken unto the voice of my supplications.

7In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee; For thou wilt answer me.

6Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.

7In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

Commentary · verses 6-7

David believed God would answer him.

8There is none like unto thee among the gods, O Lord; Neither are there any works like unto thy works.

8Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

Commentary · verse 8

No other gods or any other works for that matter were comparable to Jehovah's.

9All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; And they shall glorify thy name.

10For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: Thou art God alone.

9All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.

10For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

Commentary · verses 9-10

Jehovah was God alone! He was the Right and Just One.

11Teach me thy way, O Jehovah; I will walk in thy truth: Unite my heart to fear thy name.

11Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

Commentary · verse 11

David asked God to teach David His Will. David would not have asked this if he could not have been taught God's Will. Do you believe we can know God's Will and HOW it comes about?

12I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart; And I will glorify thy name for evermore.

13For great is thy lovingkindness toward me; And thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest Sheol.

12I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

13For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

Commentary · verses 12-13

The KJV translated "Sheol" as "hell." The Hebrew word was sheowl and it meant "underworld, grave, hell, pit."

14O God, the proud are risen up against me, And a company of violent men have sought after my soul, And have not set thee before them.

15But thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.

16Oh turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; Give thy strength unto thy servant, And save the son of thy handmaid.

17Show me a token for good, That they who hate me may see it, and be put to shame, Because thou, Jehovah, hast helped me, and comforted me.

14O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them.

15But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.

16O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.

17Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, LORD, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

Commentary · verses 14-17

David asked for a token, or sign, from God for good. David wanted those who hated him to be put to shame. David's psalm was immediately followed by two psalms from the sons of Korah, so David was surrounded by the sons of Korah: two psalms before his and two psalms after his.
