Psalm 75

1For the Chief Musician; set to Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song. We give thanks unto thee, O God; We give thanks, for thy name is near: Men tell of thy wondrous works.

2When I shall find the set time, I will judge uprightly.

1To the chief Musician, Al–taschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.

2When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.

Commentary · verses 1-2

The "set time" was God's time. When the set time was found, He would judge uprightly.

3The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I have set up the pillars of it. Selah

3The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.

Commentary · verse 3

"Selah" meant "pause and think about what you just read." The author wanted the reader to pause and become conscious of what was read.

4I said unto the arrogant, Deal not arrogantly; And to the wicked, Lift not up the horn: 5Lift not up your horn on high; Speak not with a stiff neck.

6For neither from the east, nor from the west, Nor yet from the south, cometh lifting up.

7But God is the judge: He putteth down one, and lifteth up another.

4I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:

5Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

6For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

7But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Commentary · verses 4-7

The "lifting up" of us was from God. He "promotes" or "demotes" us as the Right and Just Judge.

8For in the hand of Jehovah there is a cup, and the wine foameth; It is full of mixture, and he poureth out of the same: Surely the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall drain them, and drink them.

9But I will declare for ever, I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; But the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

8For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.

9But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.

Commentary · verses 8-10

The wicked would be cut off, the righteous would be lifted up. God's "promotions" and "demotions" were based on Righteousness.

Commentary · verse 10

Psalms 71-75 covered the conclusion of the "Exodus" section and the beginning of the "Leviticus" section of the Book of Psalms.
