Psalm 69
1For the Chief Musician; set to Shoshannim. A Psalm of David. Save me, O God; For the waters are come in unto my soul.
2I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
1To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
2I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
Commentary · verses 1-2
3I am weary with my crying; my throat is dried: Mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
3I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
Commentary · verse 3
David was emotionally drained. His throat was dry which would affect his ability to speak words and his eyes were failing which would affect his awareness.
4They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: They that would cut me off, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: That which I took not away I have to restore.
4They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
Commentary · verse 4
David's enemies hated him without a cause, or without a good cause. Who else did this happen to? From John 15:25 – "But this cometh to pass, that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause."
5O God, thou knowest my foolishness; And my sins are not hid from thee.
6Let not them that wait for thee be put to shame through me, O Lord Jehovah of hosts: Let not those that seek thee be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.
5O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.
6Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
Commentary · verses 5-6
David did not want to hinder God reaching other people.
7Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; Shame hath covered my face.
8I am become a stranger unto my brethren, And an alien unto my mother’s children.
9For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me.
7Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
8I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.
9For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
Commentary · verses 7-9
This verse was quoted in John 2:17 when Jesus drove the money-changers out of the temple at the beginning of His public ministry. Paul referenced this verse in Romans 15:3.
10When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, That was to my reproach.
11When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword unto them.
12They that sit in the gate talk of me; And I am the song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Jehovah, in an acceptable time: O God, in the abundance of thy lovingkindness, Answer me in the truth of thy salvation.
10When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
11I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
12They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.
Commentary · verses 10-13
David handled the affliction he endured by praying to God.
14Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15Let not the waterflood overwhelm me, Neither let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth upon me.
14Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
Commentary · verses 14-15
David asked for God to deliver him out of his troubles.
16Answer me, O Jehovah; for thy lovingkindness is good: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies turn thou unto me.
17And hide not thy face from thy servant; For I am in distress; answer me speedily.
16Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
17And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
Commentary · verses 16-17
The Bible used the word "distress" as most people use the word stress today. David was stressed out and wanted God to answer him quickly.
18Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: Ransom me because of mine enemies.
19Thou knowest my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor: Mine adversaries are all before thee.
20Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.
18Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.
19Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.
20Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
Commentary · verses 18-20
David found none to have compassion on him.
21They gave me also gall for my food; And in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
21They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Commentary · verse 21
Vinegar to drink: Matthew 27:48 – "And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink." This verse was also referenced in John 19:28.
22Let their table before them become a snare; And when they are in peace, let it become a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see; And make their loins continually to shake.
22Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.
Commentary · verses 22-23
David wanted his enemies' eyes darkened. This would have caused them to be unaware. David also asked for their loins to shake. The "loins" represented creating. The word "shake" meant "to waver." Paul referenced the previous two verses in Romans 11:9-10.
24Pour out thine indignation upon them, And let the fierceness of thine anger overtake them.
25Let their habitation be desolate; Let none dwell in their tents.
24Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.
25Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
Commentary · verses 24-25
The Disciples quoted this verse in Acts 1:20 when selecting another Disciple to take Judas' office.
26For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; And they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.
27Add iniquity unto their iniquity; And let them not come into thy righteousness.
28Let them be blotted out of the book of life, And not be written with the righteous.
26For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
27Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.
28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
Commentary · verses 26-28
Those who are in the Book of Life (Revelation 20:11-15) are "the righteous." Righteousness is the measure for whether or not you have eternal life.
29But I am poor and sorrowful: Let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify him with thanksgiving.
29But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
Commentary · verses 29-30
Even in his distress, David praised God.
31And it will please Jehovah better than an ox, Or a bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32The meek have seen it, and are glad: Ye that seek after God, let your heart live.
33For Jehovah heareth the needy, And despiseth not his prisoners.
34Let heaven and earth praise him, The seas, and everything that moveth therein.
35For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah; And they shall abide there, and have it in possession.
36The seed also of his servants shall inherit it; And they that love his name shall dwell therein.
31This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
33For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
34Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
35For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
36The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.
Commentary · verses 31-36
Again, the circumstances in David's life during the next psalm were not known...
David was feeling overwhelmed. "Mire" was "clay." David felt like he could not move or even stand.
