Psalm 109

1For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; 2For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit have they opened against me: They have spoken unto me with a lying tongue.

1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;

2For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

Commentary · verses 1-2

David wanted God to put His wrath against David's enemies who were speaking deceit and lies against him. Deceit was a right WHAT with a wrong/no HOW/WHY. Lies were wrong WHAT's.

3They have compassed me about also with words of hatred, And fought against me without a cause.

3They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

Commentary · verse 3

The destruction David was facing was "without a cause" meaning, without a just cause. This was a reference to Justice. This psalm sounded like a prayer...

4For my love they are my adversaries: But I give myself unto prayer.

5And they have rewarded me evil for good, And hatred for my love.

4For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.

5And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

Commentary · verses 4-5

It seemed that the actual cause of David's enemies' destruction was because of David's love! This was unjust! All that was needed was a request and this psalm was a prayer...

6Set thou a wicked man over him; And let an adversary stand at his right hand.

7When he is judged, let him come forth guilty; And let his prayer be turned into sin.

8Let his days be few; And let another take his office.

6Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.

7When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.

8Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

Commentary · verses 6-8

The Disciples quoted this verse in Acts 1:16 when they selected a Disciple to take Judas' place.

9Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow.

10Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; And let them seek their bread out of their desolate places.

9Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.

10Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

Commentary · verses 9-10

Request: David wanted his enemies to be judged and asked that God do some specific things within this judgment.

11Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; And let strangers make spoil of his labor.

11Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.

Commentary · verse 11

An extortioner gained at the expense of others. The word "catch" meant to be "struck, brought down." David asked that the man who gained at the expense of others be brought down by what he had gained. Extortion was only gaining in the short term. If you gained at the expense of another, you would owe that person and it would be equaled out.

12Let there be none to extend kindness unto him; Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children.

13Let his posterity be cut off; In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah; And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15Let them be before Jehovah continually, That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

12Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.

13Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Commentary · verses 12-15

These were David's requests. However, David still had reasons (Justice) WHY he had the value for his request...

16Because he remembered not to show kindness, But persecuted the poor and needy man, And the broken in heart, to slay them.

17Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him; And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him.

18He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment, And it came into his inward parts like water, And like oil into his bones.

16Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.

17As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.

18As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.

Commentary · verses 16-18

David referenced Justice with his reasons. Again, David made more requests...

Doctrines on this passage

19Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself, And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

20This is the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah, And of them that speak evil against my soul.

19Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

20Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul.

Commentary · verses 19-20

David asked that his enemies be given what they had given to him and others. This was Just.

21But deal thou with me, O Jehovah the Lord, for thy name’s sake: Because thy lovingkindness is good, deliver thou me; 22For I am poor and needy, And my heart is wounded within me.

21But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.

22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

Commentary · verses 21-22

David was not physically poor and needy. He talked to God about his spiritual, mental, and emotional wounds. David continued his reasons for his personal request for God to deal with him...

23I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.

24My knees are weak through fasting; And my flesh faileth of fatness.

25I am become also a reproach unto them: When they see me, they shake their head.

26Help me, O Jehovah my God; Oh save me according to thy lovingkindness: 27That they may know that this is thy hand; That thou, Jehovah, hast done it.

23I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.

24My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.

25I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads.

26Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy:

27That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it.

Commentary · verses 23-27

David wanted to be delivered so that others would see that it was God who delivered him. This was a request, which continued...

28Let them curse, but bless thou: When they arise, they shall be put to shame, But thy servant shall rejoice.

29Let mine adversaries be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

28Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice.

29Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.

Commentary · verses 28-29

Again, David was asking God to be Just. To give to his enemies what they had given to others.

30I will give great thanks unto Jehovah with my mouth; Yea, I will praise him among the multitude.

31For he will stand at the right hand of the needy, To save him from them that judge his soul.

30I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.

31For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

Commentary · verses 30-31

David ended by stating what he would do.
