Proverbs 8
Proverbs 8
1Doth not wisdom cry, And understanding put forth her voice?
2On the top of high places by the way, Where the paths meet, she standeth; 3Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, At the coming in at the doors, she crieth aloud: 4Unto you, O men, I call; And my voice is to the sons of men.
1Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
2She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
3She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
4Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
Commentary · verses 1-4
5O ye simple, understand prudence; And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart.
6Hear, for I will speak excellent things; And the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7For my mouth shall utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.
5O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
6Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
Commentary · verses 5-8
Wisdom spoke of excellent and right things: Truth (right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY). All wisdom's words were righteousness and there was nothing wrong in them.
9They are all plain to him that understandeth, And right to them that find knowledge.
9They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
Commentary · verse 9
Wisdom's words were plain (clear) to those who had understanding.
10Receive my instruction, and not silver; And knowledge rather than choice gold.
11For wisdom is better than rubies; And all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto it.
10Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
Commentary · verses 10-11
Wisdom ought to be desired more than anything. We ought to desire to make profitable decisions. However, Solomon (speaking in the place of wisdom) told us to receive instruction and knowledge from wisdom instead of silver and gold. Then he stated wisdom was better than rubies.
Remember what David wrote in Psalm 19? -
"7 The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever: The ordinances of Jehovah are true, and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb."
Commentary · verse 11
Next, Solomon more blatantly spoke in the place of wisdom...
12I wisdom have made prudence my dwelling, And find out knowledge and discretion.
13The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the perverse mouth, do I hate.
14Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge: I am understanding; I have might.
15By me kings reign, And princes decree justice.
16By me princes rule, And nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
17I love them that love me; And those that seek me diligently shall find me.
12I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
13The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
14Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
15By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
17I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
Commentary · verses 12-17
If you diligently sought wisdom, you would find her. Again, wisdom was available to all men.
18Riches and honor are with me; Yea, durable wealth and righteousness.
19My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; And my revenue than choice silver.
18Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
19My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
Commentary · verses 18-19
The fruit, or effects, of wisdom was better than gold...than "fine gold" like David wrote.
20I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice; 21That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, And that I may fill their treasuries.
22Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of his way, Before his works of old.
20I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
21That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
22The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
Commentary · verses 20-22
From the beginning, the Lord possessed wisdom.
Doctrines on this passage

24When there were no depths, I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.
25Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills was I brought forth; 26While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, Nor the beginning of the dust of the world.
23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
Commentary · verses 23-26
Next, we will see wisdom was involved in the Creation...
27When he established the heavens, I was there: When he set a circle upon the face of the deep, 28When he made firm the skies above, When the fountains of the deep became strong, 29When he gave to the sea its bound, That the waters should not transgress his commandment, When he marked out the foundations of the earth; 30Then I was by him, as a master workman; And I was daily his delight, Rejoicing always before him, 31Rejoicing in his habitable earth; And my delight was with the sons of men.
27When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
Commentary · verses 27-31
Wisdom was with God before, during, and after the Creation.
32Now therefore, my sons, hearken unto me; For blessed are they that keep my ways.
33Hear instruction, and be wise, And refuse it not.
34Blessed is the man that heareth me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35For whoso findeth me findeth life, And shall obtain favor of Jehovah.
32Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
Commentary · verses 32-35
Those who found wisdom found life: the ability to repair.
36But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: All they that hate me love death.
36But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
Commentary · verse 36
Those who hated wisdom loved death: the inability to repair.
Wisdom was seen as an excellent woman and the reader was supposed to be an excellent man. In the Bible, women were present when profitability occurred. Wisdom and understanding cried out to all men. It was man's fault if he did not make profitable decisions (wisdom) and did not know the WHY (understanding). Wisdom and understanding were available to all.
