John 16

1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble.

1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

Commentary · verse 1

Jesus spoke to the Disciples about persecution and being hated so they would be prepared when it happened. They were warned and knowing "These things" ought to cause them to not stumble when persecution happened.

2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.

2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Commentary · verse 2

The time would come that people would kill believers and think that it was God's Will. Was this a foreshadowing of what Saul/Paul of Tarsus would do?

3And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

3And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

Commentary · verse 3

Again, Jesus stated the cause of people killing believers while believing it was a service to God was that these people did not know God or Jesus.

4But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

4But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

Commentary · verse 4

Jesus gave them this information to build their faith. When the persecution came they could remember and imagine the words Jesus spoke.

5But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

5But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Commentary · verses 5-6

The Disciples were sorrowful because Jesus was leaving. Jesus pointed out they did not understand that Him leaving was a good thing in the long term.

7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.

7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Commentary · verse 7

Doctrine: The Holy Spirit could not come unless Jesus went away. It was good that Jesus went away so that He could send the Comforter.

Doctrines on this passage

8And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Commentary · verse 8

Doctrine: The Holy Spirit would bring conviction with respect to sin, righteousness, and judgment.

9of sin, because they believe not on me; 10of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; 11of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.

12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

9Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

Commentary · verses 9-12

Jesus held back information for the benefit of the Disciples, it would have caused confusion.

13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.

13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Commentary · verse 13

Doctrine: The Holy Spirit would guide believers into all truth and would show believers things to come.

14He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

15All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Commentary · verses 14-15

Jesus brooded over the Disciples. Jesus was transferring the brooding responsibility to the Holy Spirit.

16A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.

16A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

Commentary · verse 16

The KJV did not end this verse with "and ye shall see me." There was a comma after "me" with the addition of "because I go to the Father."

Jesus stated that He would leave and that He would return in "a little while." What did Jesus mean? The context before this verse (back to verse 7) was concerning the Holy Spirit. Did Jesus mean He would return (meaning the resurrection) or that He would return through the Holy Spirit?

Doctrines on this passage

17Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

17Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

Commentary · verse 17

This verse proved that Jesus did say, "because I go to the Father" because the Disciples specifically spoke about it. Jesus was speaking about His return through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost when He said they would see Him in "a little while."

18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith.

18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

Commentary · verse 18

The Disciples did not understand what Jesus meant by "A little while."

19Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

19Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

Commentary · verse 19

Jesus perceived the Disciples were desirous (afraid) to ask what Jesus meant.

20Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world.

20Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

Commentary · verses 20-21

The sorrow would be short term and forgotten when the joy that came in the long term would be experienced.

22And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.

23And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.

24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.

22And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Commentary · verses 22-24

Doctrine: God wants to bless His people but His people must first ask in order to receive.

Doctrines on this passage

25These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.

26In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you; 27for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.

28I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.

25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

27For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

Commentary · verses 25-28

Jesus plainly stated that He had come from the Father into the world and that He would leave the world to go unto the Father. The Disciples knew Jesus was speaking about God the Father.

29His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying.

30Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

29His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

30Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

Commentary · verses 29-30

The Disciples stated they believed Jesus came from God.

31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Commentary · verses 31-33

Even though the Disciples stated they believed Jesus came from God, Jesus said the hour was coming that the Disciples would scatter and leave Jesus. Jesus stated this so that the Disciples did not lose faith when it looked like the world was winning.
