Isaiah 61
Isaiah 61
1The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2to proclaim the year of Jehovah’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Commentary · verses 1-2
3to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.
3To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
Commentary · verse 3
These first three verses were one sentence and would only be completely fulfilled after the Tribulation. "Trees of Righteousness" was symbolic of men who were strong in the Lord's Righteousness. They have been "planted" by God and bear His fruit.
4And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
5And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners shall be your plowmen and your vine-dressers.
4And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
5And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
Commentary · verses 4-5
During the Millennium, people not of Israel (strangers) will serve, including being shepherds.
6But ye shall be named the priests of Jehovah; men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
6But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
Commentary · verse 6
The Israelites during the Millennium will be priests and ministers of God.
7Instead of your shame ye shall have double; and instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be unto them.
7For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.
Commentary · verse 7
Due to Justice, they will receive double because of what was taken from them…similar to Job receiving double what was taken from him.
8For I, Jehovah, love justice, I hate robbery with iniquity; and I will give them their recompense in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
8For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
Commentary · verse 8
9And their seed shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which Jehovah hath blessed.
10I will greatly rejoice in Jehovah, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with a garland, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
9And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed.
10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Commentary · verses 9-10
This should be read as if Christ was saying it in the first person. The robe of righteousness was referenced by Jesus in Matthew 22:13 when He told the Parable of the Marriage of the King's Son.
Doctrines on this passage
11For as the earth bringeth forth its bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord Jehovah will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
11For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
Commentary · verse 11
Righteousness will be abundant throughout the earth during the Millennium.
Jesus quoted these two verses when He taught in the synagogue (Luke 4:18-19) but stopped and "closed the book" before reading this part of the passage: "and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn..."
Jesus stated verse 1 and the first phrase of verse 2 were fulfilled in their hearing. Again, that part of this prophecy covered the time before Pentecost. The rest of this prophecy covered the time after the Tribulation. However, to people during the Dispensation of the Law, the prophecy looked "continuous" because our dispensation was hidden.
This apparent continuous prophecy phenomenon was also seen in the Book of Joel and the Book of Daniel.
