Ezekiel 15

1And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 2Son of man, what is the vine-tree more than any tree, the vine-branch which is among the trees of the forest?

1And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest?

Commentary · verses 1-2

The unprofitability of the Jews was shown by a parable of a vine…

3Shall wood be taken thereof to make any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon?

4Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire hath devoured both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned: is it profitable for any work?

3Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon?

4Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?

Commentary · verses 3-4

God was showing Ezekiel the uselessness of wood when it was burned in the fire. In verse 3, "pin" was the same as "peg." This passage stated wood that was burned cannot even be used as a peg to hang any vessel on.

5Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is burned, shall it yet be meet for any work!

5Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is burned?

Commentary · verse 5

Can wood that has been burnt be useful for any work?

6Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: As the vine-tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

7And I will set my face against them; they shall go forth from the fire, but the fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am Jehovah, when I set my face against them.

6Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

7And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.

Commentary · verses 6-7

The picture of the wood being burnt and not profitable symbolized Jerusalem and its judgment.

8And I will make the land desolate, because they have committed a trespass, saith the Lord Jehovah.

8And I will make the land desolate, because they have committed a trespass, saith the Lord GOD.

Commentary · verse 8

The land would be desolate because of their trespasses.

Ezekiel 13-15 covered God's judgments on Israel and false prophets.
