Leviticus 7

Commentary · verses 1-38

This chapter finished the theme from chapters 4-7 which covered mandatory offerings concerned with offenses towards man and finished the explanation of offerings all together.

Commentary · verses 1-10

Verses 1-10: the guilt offering, also known as trespass-offering.

1And this is the law of the trespass-offering: it is most holy.

2In the place where they kill the burnt-offering shall they kill the trespass-offering; and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle upon the altar round about.

3And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof: the fat tail, and the fat that covereth the inwards, 4and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the caul upon the liver, with the kidneys, shall he take away; 5and the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto Jehovah: it is a trespass-offering.

6Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in a holy place: it is most holy.

7As is the sin-offering, so is the trespass-offering; there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith, he shall have it.

1Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it is most holy.

2In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle round about upon the altar.

3And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof; the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards,

4And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul that is above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away:

5And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a trespass offering.

6Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy.

7As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering: there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it.

Commentary · verse 7

God explained to Moses the details of the trespass-offering. Same as burnt-offering, fat and blood was given to God, meat was given to the priest who offered it.

8And the priest that offereth any man’s burnt-offering, even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt-offering which he hath offered.

9And every meal-offering that is baken in the oven, and all that is dressed in the frying-pan, and on the baking-pan, shall be the priest’s that offereth it.

10And every meal-offering, mingled with oil, or dry, shall all the sons of Aaron have, one as well as another.

8And the priest that offereth any man’s burnt offering, even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt offering which he hath offered.

9And all the meat offering that is baken in the oven, and all that is dressed in the fryingpan, and in the pan, shall be the priest’s that offereth it.

10And every meat offering, mingled with oil, and dry, shall all the sons of Aaron have, one as much as another.

Commentary · verse 10

God covered different specific meat offerings. It looks like it was the head priest's responsibility to see that it was evenly distributed among the priests.

Commentary · verses 11-36

Verses 11-36: the peace-offering.

11And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which one shall offer unto Jehovah.

12If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour soaked.

13With cakes of leavened bread he shall offer his oblation with the sacrifice of his peace-offerings for thanksgiving.

14And of it he shall offer one out of each oblation for a heave-offering unto Jehovah; it shall be the priest’s that sprinkleth the blood of the peace-offerings.

15And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten on the day of his oblation; he shall not leave any of it until the morning.

16But if the sacrifice of his oblation be a vow, or a freewill-offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offereth his sacrifice; and on the morrow that which remaineth of it shall be eaten: 17but that which remaineth of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.

18And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings be eaten on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.

19And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire. And as for the flesh, every one that is clean shall eat thereof: 20but the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace-offerings, that pertain unto Jehovah, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from his people.

21And when any one shall touch any unclean thing, the uncleanness of man, or an unclean beast, or any unclean abomination, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which pertain unto Jehovah, that soul shall be cut off from his people.

22And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 23Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no fat, of ox, or sheep, or goat.

24And the fat of that which dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn of beasts, may be used for any other service; but ye shall in no wise eat of it.

25For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto Jehovah, even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.

26And ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of bird or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

27Whosoever it be that eateth any blood, that soul shall be cut off from his people.

11And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer unto the LORD.

12If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.

13Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.

14And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave offering unto the LORD, and it shall be the priest’s that sprinkleth the blood of the peace offerings.

15And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall not leave any of it until the morning.

16But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow, or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offereth his sacrifice: and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be eaten:

17But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.

18And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.

19And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire: and as for the flesh, all that be clean shall eat thereof.

20But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

21Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any abominable unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which pertain unto the LORD, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

22And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

23Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.

24And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.

25For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.

26Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

27Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

Commentary · verse 27

Whatever soul ate any manner of blood, that soul would be cut off from the people.

28And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 29Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, He that offereth the sacrifice of his peace-offerings unto Jehovah shall bring his oblation unto Jehovah out of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings: 30his own hands shall bring the offerings of Jehovah made by fire; the fat with the breast shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave-offering before Jehovah.

31And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar; but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’.

32And the right thigh shall ye give unto the priest for a heave-offering out of the sacrifices of your peace-offerings.

33He among the sons of Aaron that offereth the blood of the peace-offerings, and the fat, shall have the right thigh for a portion.

34For the wave-breast and the heave-thigh have I taken of the children of Israel out of the sacrifices of their peace-offerings, and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons as their portion for ever from the children of Israel.

35This is the anointing-portion of Aaron, and the anointing-portion of his sons, out of the offerings of Jehovah made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto Jehovah in the priest’s office; 36which Jehovah commanded to be given them of the children of Israel, in the day that he anointed them. It is their portion for ever throughout their generations.

28And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

29Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, He that offereth the sacrifice of his peace offerings unto the LORD shall bring his oblation unto the LORD of the sacrifice of his peace offerings.

30His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before the LORD.

31And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar: but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’.

32And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest for an heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.

33He among the sons of Aaron, that offereth the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right shoulder for his part.

34For the wave breast and the heave shoulder have I taken of the children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Israel.

35This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron, and of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto the LORD in the priest’s office;

36Which the LORD commanded to be given them of the children of Israel, in the day that he anointed them, by a statute for ever throughout their generations.

Commentary · verse 36

God explained the details of the peace-offering. It was offered out of thanksgiving or fulfilling a vow. The meat had to be eaten within three days and leftovers burnt by fire, everyone must have been clean, eating God's portion would get you cut out, a portion ought to have been waved before the Lord by the person who brought it.

Commentary · verses 37-38

Verses 37-38: Summary that all the offerings were explained.

37This is the law of the burnt-offering, of the meal-offering, and of the sin-offering, and of the trespass-offering, and of the consecration, and of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; 38which Jehovah commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto Jehovah, in the wilderness of Sinai.

37This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meat offering, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering, and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace offerings;

38Which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai.

Commentary · verse 38

Now that the explanation of the offerings was completed, we will take a moment to see how Jesus fulfilled these. Here is an Old Testament and New Testament scripture to establish Jesus was related to these offerings:

"Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper in his hand." (Isaiah 53:10)

"And every priest indeed standeth day by day ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, the which can never take away sins: but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; henceforth expecting till his enemies be made the footstool of his feet." (Hebrews 10:11-13)

Christ fulfilled the offerings from the first five chapters of Leviticus.

27And he put all upon Aaron’s hands, and upon his sons’ hands, and waved them for a wave offering before the LORD.

28And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were consecrations for a sweet savour: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Commentary · verse 33

Aaron and his sons were consecrated for seven days (priests had to live in the tent of meeting for seven days). "Consecration" meant "a type of inauguration" or, in this case, the beginning of Aaron and his sons filling the office of a priest.

34As hath been done this day, so Jehovah hath commanded to do, to make atonement for you.

35And at the door of the tent of meeting shall ye abide day and night seven days, and keep the charge of Jehovah, that ye die not: for so I am commanded.

36And Aaron and his sons did all the things which Jehovah commanded by Moses.

34As he hath done this day, so the LORD hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.

35Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not: for so I am commanded.

36So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
