23So he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
24And on the morrow they entered into Cæsarea. And Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends.

27And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
Commentary · verses 27-28
Doctrine: Peter gained understanding of the vision and realized God showed him that he should not call any man "common or unclean."
29wherefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent ye sent for me.
30And Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel, 31and saith, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
32Send therefore to Joppa, and call unto thee Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side.

32Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
33Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

34Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
Commentary · verse 35
Doctrine: Any man who fears God and "worketh righteousness" is acceptable to God.
36The word which he sent unto the children of Israel, preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all)— 37that saying ye yourselves know, which was published throughout all Judæa, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom also they slew, hanging him on a tree.
40Him God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest,
36The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
Commentary · verse 40

41not to all the people, but unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42And he charged us to preach unto the people, and to testify that this is he who is ordained of God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.
43To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins.
44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word.
41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
Commentary · verse 44
While Peter spoke these words the Holy Spirit fell on those who heard.
45And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.
45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Commentary · verse 46

48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Commentary · verses 47-48
Doctrine: It is possible to believe and be baptized of the Holy Spirit before being water baptized. Peter commanded them to be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 11
1Now the apostles and the brethren that were in Judæa heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.
1And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

2And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, 3saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.
2And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,
3Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.
Commentary · verses 2-3
The believing Jews (including Apostles) contended with Peter for going with the Gentiles and eating with them. This was one of the themes of the Book of Acts: Doctrinal conflict among believers. Watch closely how this conflict was resolved.
Commentary · verses 4-10
Verses 4-10: Peter explained his vision.
4But Peter began, and expounded the matter unto them in order, saying, 5I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even unto me: 6upon which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw the fourfooted beasts of the earth and wild beasts and creeping things and birds of the heaven.
7And I heard also a voice saying unto me, Rise, Peter; kill and eat.
8But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath ever entered into my mouth.
9But a voice answered the second time out of heaven, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common.
10And this was done thrice: and all were drawn up again into heaven.
4But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,
5I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:
6Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
7And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
8But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.
9But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
10And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.
Commentary · verse 10
Peter shared his testimony of the vision he had including the HOW/WHY.
Commentary · verses 11-17
Verses 11-17: Peter's explanation of the events that happened after his vision.
11And behold, forthwith three men stood before the house in which we were, having been sent from Cæsarea unto me.
12And the Spirit bade me go with them, making no distinction. And these six brethren also accompanied me; and we entered into the man’s house: 13and he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying, Send to Joppa, and fetch Simon, whose surname is Peter; 14who shall speak unto thee words, whereby thou shalt be saved, thou and all thy house.
15And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.
16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
11And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Cesarea unto me.
12And the spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:
13And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
14Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
15And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
16Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
Commentary · verse 16
Peter shared testimonies of signs and wonders for himself and Cornelius with confirmation in physical events. Peter quoted the Word: he remembered having been taught by Jesus about being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
17If then God gave unto them the like gift as he did also unto us, when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?
17Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?
Commentary · verse 17
Peter concluded with a contrastive question: If the Gentiles received the same gift from God that we received, who am I to fight with God?
18And when they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then to the Gentiles also hath God granted repentance unto life.
18When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
Commentary · verse 18
The believing Jews acknowledged God had granted the Gentiles repentance unto life because of Peter's presentation which included testimony of signs and wonders, confirmation in physical events, and Doctrine taught by Jesus.
19They therefore that were scattered abroad upon the tribulation that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none save only to Jews.
20But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.
21And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number that believed turned unto the Lord.
19Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
20And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
21And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
Commentary · verses 19-21
Those that were evangelizing abroad ever since the martyring of Stephen had only been speaking to Jews. However, some also evangelized to Greeks. This showed confirmation of Peter's widening of Doctrine: People from many different nations were also being evangelized at this same time.
22And the report concerning them came to the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas as far as Antioch: 23who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad; and he exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord: 24for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
22Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
23Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
24For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
Commentary · verses 22-24
Barnabas confirmed the physical manifestations and encouraged them to continue evangelizing to Gentiles. Barnabas was a good man and full of the Holy Spirit.
25And he went forth to Tarsus to seek for Saul;
25Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
Commentary · verse 25
Barnabas sought out Saul/Paul.
26and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people; and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
26And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
Commentary · verse 26
Barnabas and Saul taught the church in Antioch for a whole year. The Disciples were called "Christians" first in Antioch. Notice, the Disciples did not declare themselves as "Christians," the people of Antioch did, possibly by unbelievers. Notice, Saul, who was the believer most educated in the Law was called to teach the Gentiles, not the Jews.
27Now in these days there came down prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be a great famine over all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius.
29And the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren that dwelt in Judæa: 30which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.
27And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar.
29Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea:
30Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
Commentary · verses 27-30
Doctrine: Prophets and prophecy concerning natural events were respected and responded to after the resurrection of Jesus.

1Now about that time Herod the king put forth his hands to afflict certain of the church.

2And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
Commentary · verses 1-3
Herod killed James the Greater and when he saw that it pleased the Jews he also sought to kill Peter. Herod must have been feeling threatened by these men and the church.
4And when he had taken him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him; intending after the Passover to bring him forth to the people.
5Peter therefore was kept in the prison: but prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him.
4And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

Commentary · verse 6
Peter slept between two soldiers. Peter was in prison, awaiting his execution, and he was fast asleep! Peter had completely surrendered his will to God.
7And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shined in the cell: and he smote Peter on the side, and awoke him, saying, Rise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
7And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
Commentary · verse 7
An angel came in and a light shined in the prison. The angel struck Peter's side, raised him up, and Peter's chains fell off: supernatural event.
8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And he did so. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
9And he went out, and followed; and he knew not that it was true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw a vision.
8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
9And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
Commentary · verses 8-9
Peter followed the angel out of the prison. Peter thought that this was only a vision.
Doctrine: Visions look as real as the physical world.
10And when they were past the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth into the city; which opened to them of its own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and straightway the angel departed from him.

11And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
Commentary · verse 11
Peter was convinced this was God once he realized this was reality, not a vision.
12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying.
12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
Commentary · verse 15
A common belief that answers the question of their confusion was that a person's angel looks and sounds like the person. The people told Rhoda she was mad or that she must be seeing Peter's angel, even though these people were praying for Peter's release.
16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.
16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
Commentary · verse 17
Peter told them of the escape and then told them to tell James the Lesser about the events.
18Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and tarried there.
20Now he was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: and they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, they asked for peace, because their country was fed from the king’s country.
21And upon a set day Herod arrayed himself in royal apparel, and sat on the throne, and made an oration unto them.
