Where You Stopped

1 Chronicles 16

Commentary · verses 1-43

This chapter covered David's Psalm of Thanks.

1And they brought in the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before God.

2And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Jehovah.

3And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a portion of flesh, and a cake of raisins.

1So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.

2And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.

3And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.

Commentary · verses 1-3

After giving offerings to God and blessing the people in the Name of God, David led the people in breaking bread with one another.

4And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of Jehovah, and to celebrate and to thank and praise Jehovah, the God of Israel: 5Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with psalteries and with harps; and Asaph with cymbals, sounding aloud; 6and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually, before the ark of the covenant of God.

4And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:

5Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed–edom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;

6Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

Commentary · verses 4-6

David assembled a band and choir to play in celebration and praise to God.

Commentary · verses 7-36

Verses 7-36: David's psalm of thanksgiving. This psalm, with very slight variations, can be found in Psalm 96:1-13, Psalm 105:1-15, and Psalm 106:47-48.

7Then on that day did David first ordain to give thanks unto Jehovah, by the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

7Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

Commentary · verses 8-13

Verses 8-13: the call to praise.

8O give thanks unto Jehovah, call upon his name; Make known his doings among the peoples.

9Sing unto him, sing praises unto him; Talk ye of all his marvellous works.

10Glory ye in his holy name; Let the heart of them rejoice that seek Jehovah.

8Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

9Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.

10Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

Commentary · verse 10

God's "name," His cause, is Holy.

11Seek ye Jehovah and his strength; Seek his face evermore.

12Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of his mouth, 13O ye seed of Israel his servant, Ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

11Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.

12Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

13O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

Commentary · verse 13

David wanted the people to recognize the works that God had done and to sing and praise Him for the works He was doing.

Commentary · verses 14-19

Verses 14-19: remember God's Covenant with His people.

14He is Jehovah our God; His judgments are in all the earth.

15Remember his covenant for ever, The word which he commanded to a thousand generations, 16The covenant which he made with Abraham, And his oath unto Isaac, 17And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a statute, To Israel for an everlasting covenant,

14He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

15Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;

16Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;

17And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

Commentary · verse 17

An "everlasting" covenant. This Covenant had a beginning but will not have an end.

18Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, The lot of your inheritance; 19When ye were but a few men in number, Yea, very few, and sojourners in it;

18Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;

19When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.

Commentary · verses 20-22

Verses 20-22: God provided refuge for His people.

20And they went about from nation to nation, And from one kingdom to another people.

21He suffered no man to do them wrong; Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, 22Saying, Touch not mine anointed ones, And do my prophets no harm.

20And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;

21He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

22Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

Commentary · verses 23-30

Verses 23-30: the command to praise the Lord.

23Sing unto Jehovah, all the earth; Show forth his salvation from day to day.

24Declare his glory among the nations, His marvellous works among all the peoples.

25For great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised: He also is to be feared above all gods.

26For all the gods of the peoples are idols: But Jehovah made the heavens.

23Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.

24Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.

25For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.

26For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.

Commentary · verse 26

Jehovah ought to be respected more than any and every other god. Jehovah is the Creator, the gods of the people were created.

27Honor and majesty are before him: Strength and gladness are in his place.

28Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kindreds of the peoples, Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength; 29Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come before him; Worship Jehovah in holy array.

27Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.

28Give unto the LORD, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.

29Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Commentary · verse 29

David encouraged the people to speak of God to all people and David gave the reason they should do this.

30Tremble before him, all the earth: The world also is established that it cannot be moved.

30Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.

Commentary · verses 31-33

Verses 31-33: creation itself praises the Lord.

31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; And let them say among the nations, Jehovah reigneth.

32Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; Let the field exult, and all that is therein; 33Then shall the trees of the wood sing for joy before Jehovah; For he cometh to judge the earth.

31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth.

32Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.

33Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.

Commentary · verses 34-36

Verses 34-36: Conclusion - a celebration of God's faithfulness to His people.

34O give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever.

35And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, And gather us together and deliver us from the nations, To give thanks unto thy holy name, And to triumph in thy praise.

36Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And all the people said, Amen, and praised Jehovah.

34O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

35And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.

36Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD.

Commentary · verse 36

This psalm ended by all of the people saying "Amen" and praising God. This was a statement of their will that they were in agreement with the words David said.

Commentary · verses 37-43

Verses 37-43: a focus on maintaining the worship of God.

37So he left there, before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required; 38and Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be doorkeepers; 39and Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of Jehovah in the high place that was at Gibeon, 40to offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah upon the altar of burnt-offering continually morning and evening, even according to all that is written in the law of Jehovah, which he commanded unto Israel; 41and with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were mentioned by name, to give thanks to Jehovah, because his lovingkindness endureth for ever; 42and with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should sound aloud, and with instruments for the songs of God; and the sons of Jeduthun to be at the gate.

43And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.

37So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required:

38And Obed–edom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obed–edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters:

39And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,

40To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel;

41And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever;

42And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters.

43And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.

1 Chronicles 17

Commentary · verses 1-27

A house for God and a house for David.

1And it came to pass, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah dwelleth under curtains.

2And Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thy heart; for God is with thee.

1Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains.

2Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.

Commentary · verses 1-2

David wanted to build God a temple and the prophet Nathan told him to do what was in his heart because God was with him. Basically, God would be led by David. Notice, Nathan did not say, "God says do what is in your heart."

3And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith Jehovah, Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in:

3And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

4Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:

Commentary · verses 3-4

That night, God told Nathan to tell David to not build Him a temple. Remember, in 2 Samuel 7, it stated David had a time of rest. David was not at war.

5for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel, unto this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

6In all places wherein I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

5For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

6Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?

Commentary · verses 7-15

Verses 7-15: God made a promise to David.

7Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people Israel: 8and I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast gone, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

9And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the first, 10and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will subdue all thine enemies. Moreover I tell thee that Jehovah will build thee a house.

11And it shall come to pass, when thy days are fulfilled that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will set up thy seed after thee, who shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

12He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever.

7Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:

8And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.

9Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,

10And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house.

11And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

12He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.

Commentary · verse 12

God would raise up a son (Solomon) of David's and he would build a temple for God. His throne being established forever was known as "The Davidic Covenant." God promised the Christ would come from David's line.

13I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my lovingkindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee;

13I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:

Commentary · verse 13

God would not take His lovingkindness (mercy) away from Solomon. While this looked like a good thing, we now know (from 1 Kings 11) this prevented God from punishing Solomon directly as Solomon ignored God's warnings and multiplied wives to himself that led his heart away from God.

14but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom for ever; and his throne shall be established for ever.

15According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

14But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.

15According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Commentary · verses 16-22

Verses 16-22: David responded with a thankful heart.

16Then David the king went in, and sat before Jehovah; and he said, Who am I, O Jehovah God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?

17And this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; but thou hast spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Jehovah God.

18What can David say yet more unto thee concerning the honor which is done to thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.

16And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

17And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.

18What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.

Commentary · verse 18

David humbled himself and asked God for direction.

19O Jehovah, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things.

20O Jehovah, there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

21And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, to make thee a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou redeemedst out of Egypt?

22For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, Jehovah, becamest their God.

19O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.

20O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

21And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?

22For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.

Commentary · verse 22

David was praising God, even after David's desire to build God a temple was refused.

23And now, O Jehovah, let the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, be established for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.

24And let thy name be established and magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and the house of David thy servant is established before thee.

25For thou, O my God, hast revealed to thy servant that thou wilt build him a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray before thee.

26And now, O Jehovah, thou art God, and hast promised this good thing unto thy servant: 27and now it hath pleased thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Jehovah, hast blessed, and it is blessed for ever.

23Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.

24Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.

25For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.

26And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

27Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.

Commentary · verses 23-27

David stated his will that he was in agreement with this Covenant with God which covered David not building a house for God, David's son building the house for God, and the Christ coming from David's line.

1 Chronicles 18

Commentary · verses 1-17

This chapter continued the focus on David's kingdom.

1And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and its towns out of the hand of the Philistines.

2And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became servants to David, and brought tribute.

1Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines.

2And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.

Commentary · verses 1-2

David took Gath (Goliath's home town) and he smote Moab (from Lot). Like was stated in 2 Samuel 8, once the Davidic Covenant was in place, David had greater victories in war.

3And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to establish his dominion by the river Euphrates.

4And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen; and David hocked all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for a hundred chariots.

5And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succor Hadarezer king of Zobah, David smote of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

6Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.

3And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates.

5And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

6Then David put garrisons in Syria–damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought gifts. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

Commentary · verses 3-6

David smote 22,000 Syrians and then put soldiers in Syria and the people there became his servants. God brought this victory to David.

7And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

8And from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadarezer, David took very much brass, wherewith Solomon made the brazen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.

7And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

8Likewise from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, brought David very much brass, wherewith Solomon made the brasen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.

Commentary · verses 7-8

The brass that Solomon used for the temple came from David.

9And when Tou king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah, 10he sent Hadoram his son to king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadarezer and smitten him (for Hadarezer had wars with Tou); and he had with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.

11These also did king David dedicate unto Jehovah, with the silver and the gold that he carried away from all the nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

9Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah;

10He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to enquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.

11Them also king David dedicated unto the LORD, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

Commentary · verses 9-11

David got more resources for the temple. Notice, all four descendents of Esau and Lot were mentioned in one verse.

12Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah smote of the Edomites in the Valley of Salt eighteen thousand.

13And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.

14And David reigned over all Israel; and he executed justice and righteousness unto all his people.

12Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah slew of the Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand.

13And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became David’s servants. Thus the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

14So David reigned over all Israel, and executed judgment and justice among all his people.

Commentary · verses 12-14

David did righteousness and justice. This was why David was a great king, he was a man after God's own Heart, after Righteousness and Justice.

15And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, recorder.

16And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe;

17And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king.

Commentary · verses 15-17

In 2 Samuel 9, after David had subdued all his enemies, he looked for someone from Saul's house to show kindness to. He found out about Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, and showed him kindness. Clearly the Book of 2 Samuel told a story, while the Book of 1 Chronicles was focused on the events of the king as king. David defeating Goliath, David's relationship to Jonathan, etc. were all events that had nothing to do with king David's actions as king.

Commentary · verse 17

This day's reading covered the Davidic Covenant, David's victories in war, and David looking to keep his Covenant with Jonathan by showing kindness to Jonathan's descendants.
