Where You Stopped
1 Chronicles 13
1And David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, even with every leader.
2And David said unto all the assembly of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and if it be of Jehovah our God, let us send abroad every where unto our brethren that are left in all the land of Israel, with whom the priests and Levites are in their cities that have suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us; 3and let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we sought not unto it in the days of Saul.
1And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.
2And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
3And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.
Commentary · verses 1-3
4And all the assembly said that they would do so; for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor the brook of Egypt even unto the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
4And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath–jearim.
Commentary · verses 4-5
They went to Kiriath-jearim to get the Ark. It had been there for twenty years: 1 Samuel 7:2.
6And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God Jehovah that sitteth above the cherubim, that is called by the Name.
7And they carried the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
8And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, even with songs, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.
9And when they came unto the threshing-floor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.
10And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put forth his hand to the ark; and there he died before God.
6And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath–jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it.
7And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart.
8And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.
9And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.
10And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.
Commentary · verses 6-10
God smote Uzza for touching the Ark. In Numbers 4:15-20, the Levites were forbidden to touch the Ark on the threat of death. In the case of the Philistines handling the Ark, they were not killed because of their ignorance.
11And David was displeased, because Jehovah had broken forth upon Uzza: and he called that place Perez-uzza, unto this day.
11And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called Perez–uzza to this day.
Commentary · verse 11
"Perez-uzza" meant "breach of Uzza."
12And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?
13So David removed not the ark unto him into the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
12And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?
13So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed–edom the Gittite.
Commentary · verses 12-13
David's fear caused him to not bring the Ark to the city of David, another name for Jerusalem.
14And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months: and Jehovah blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.
14And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed–edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed–edom, and all that he had.
Commentary · verse 14
The Ark stayed with Obed-edom for three months and God blessed his house.

1Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him an house.
2And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.
Commentary · verses 1-2
David was prosperous. Another king sent David supplies to build himself a house and David recognized that God had established him as king.
3And David took more wives at Jerusalem; and David begat more sons and daughters.
3And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters.

8And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David: and David heard of it, and went out against them.
4Now these are the names of his children which he had in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,
5And Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet,
6And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
7And Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet.
8And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.
Commentary · verse 8
The Philistines went to seek David. Was their intention to fight?
9Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.
9And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
Commentary · verse 9
Clearly the Philistines had more in mind than just seeking David.
10And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thy hand.
10And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
Commentary · verse 10
David went to God regarding going against the Philistines.
11So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there; and David said, God hath broken mine enemies by my hand, like the breach of waters. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.
11So they came up to Baal–perazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal–perazim.
Commentary · verse 11
"Baal-perazim" meant "lord of the breaks," an overwhelming force like a breakthrough of water.
12And they left their gods there; and David gave commandment, and they were burned with fire.
13And the Philistines yet again made a raid in the valley.
14And David inquired again of God; and God said unto him, Thou shalt not go up after them: turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry-trees.
12And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.
13And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.
14Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
Commentary · verses 12-14
Again, David asked God what to do. This story was also covered in 2 Samuel 5.
15And it shall be, when thou hearest the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry-trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle; for God is gone out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.
16And David did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer.
17And the fame of David went out into all lands; and Jehovah brought the fear of him upon all nations.
15And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.
16David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.
17And the fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.

Commentary · verses 11-15
Verses 11-15: the Ark is brought into Jerusalem with the right method.
11And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab, 12and said unto them, Ye are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of Jehovah, the God of Israel, unto the place that I have prepared for it.
13For because ye bare it not at the first, Jehovah our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not according to the ordinance.
11And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab,
12And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
13For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order.
Commentary · verse 13
The reason David commanded this: God brought a breach upon them because of Uzza. David realized they had not consulted the Law on how to move the Ark.
14So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

15And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.
Commentary · verse 15
Exodus 25:14 was one of the recordings of this command. Unfortunately, it took the death of Uzza for David and the Levites to carry the Ark how God commanded. They had put the Ark on a cart which caused the breach on Uzza when it looked like it was going to tip over. This time they had Levites carry it on poles.
Commentary · verses 16-24

23And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark.
24And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed–edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.

25So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of the house of Obed-edom with joy.
26And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, that they sacrificed seven bullocks and seven rams.
27And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: and David had upon him an ephod of linen.
28Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of Jehovah with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, sounding aloud with psalteries and harps.
29And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David dancing and playing; and she despised him in her heart.
25So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obed–edom with joy.
26And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams.
27And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.
28Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.
29And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.
Commentary · verse 29
Remember, David was not allowed in the temple because he was the tenth generation from a bastard. This was as close as he was ever going to get to the Ark. David's wife, Michal, despised David for dancing and playing before the Ark. It seemed David did this in public. Was Michal embarrassed?
This day's reading covered when David brought the Ark back to Jerusalem.
David spoke with the leaders of Israel regarding his desire to bring the Ark back.
