Whenever I think of "Truth" I think of "Vitamin C". Here's why...
Between 1500-1700 over two million Europeans died from a disease called scurvy. It has always been a preventable disease. The cure for scurvy wasn't proven until 1960. It is now known that Vitamin C is the solution. Our bodies don't produce Vitamin C, but we can get it multiple different ways.
Are you able to identify Truth? If Truth is outside of us our ability to determine what it is could affect our eternal life!
Overview
Truth is a Right WHAT with a Right HOW/WHY. A fact is a Right WHAT. The ability to create comes from the HOW/WHY. Truth is a fact that creates. Truth is a fact that is good.
Discussion Question
Do you believe you are seeking a Right HOW/WHY?

37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.
37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verse 37
Doctrine: Jesus was born (of the flesh) for this cause: to bear witness of the truth. Everyone who hears (understands) Jesus' voice is of the truth, which was the message Jesus spoke to His Disciples during the Last Supper.
Commentary · verse 38
Pilate asked, "What is truth?" and did not wait for an answer. Some people attempt to use this verse to say no one knows the definition of truth. Truth is a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY. Truth is facts that create. Pilate found no fault in Jesus.

24Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves: 25for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Commentary
The Creator is the HOW/WHY. The created is the WHAT. The Creator is Right and Just, and cares more about the HOW/WHY because it creates. A WHAT, a fact, is an effect, and if it's truth it has a Right HOW and a Right WHY.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 23-25
People chose to consider the physical pre-eminent, instead of the spiritual. They attempted to become the source instead of worshipping God as the source. This is an example of attempting to reverse causality.
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father.
22Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers.
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Commentary
Worshiping what you do not know is not true worship. "A God that can be understood is not God at all," when people say that do they know who they are worshiping? To worship in truth means to do it with a Right WHAT with a Right HOW/WHY. Worship is a Right WHAT, if you do not know who you are worshiping your Right WHAT is with a Wrong HOW/WHY.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 21-22
Jesus said the physical location of the worship was not important because it could be anywhere. The key to worshipping God was to know who God was and to worship Him in spirit, which means you could worship Him in this mountain, in Jerusalem, in a foreign country, etc.
Commentary · verse 23
Doctrine: True worshippers worship God the Father in Spirit and in truth. They worship God with a right HOW/WHY. They know who God is and they focus on the spiritual.
Commentary · verse 24
Doctrine: God is a Spirit. God is intangible. God is principles (foundational truths). God is Holy: Right and Just.

23And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
24And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
Commentary
When the woman saw that Elijah did something good, she said she knew that the word of God in his mouth was truth. Good creates and evil destroys. So, it is possible for the Word of God in someone's mouth not to be truth. If someone claims to have the Word of God in their mouth it would only be a WHAT, unless it is truth, then it would create!
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 1-24
This chapter was referenced in James 5:17.
Commentary · verses 23-24
The woman attested to Elijah being a man of God. Notice, Elijah had not exalted himself as a prophet.
17Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth.
17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Commentary
The Word of God in God's Mouth is truth. God cannot lie. God is always Understanding and Wisdom. The "word" in this passage was logos (understanding). The word with understanding (WHY) is truth. The word without understanding was graphe. It is knowledge. The devil has knowledge, knowledge is a WHAT. The devil doesn't have understanding, he cannot create. The devil knows the word of God, he is even able to quote scripture because it is in him. The devil has knowledge, and can actually state reality. Is there truth in the devil?
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 1-26
This chapter contained a prayer by Jesus for His Apostles and all other believers.
Commentary · verses 16-17
Doctrine: God's Word is truth. When God uses His Word it is always truth, it is always a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY, it always creates.
42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.
43Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.
44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
45But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.
46Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?
47He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.
42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

Commentary · verse 42
Again, Jesus did not directly/plainly say God was His Father or that He was the Son of God in this sentence. However, this sentence was now the most direct/plain statement Jesus had made during this discussion. The people should have understood what Jesus was saying because He had tied up every loose end with this sentence.
Commentary · verse 43
Jesus was completely aware that He had said enough for everyone to believe He had stated He was the Son of God, without directly/plainly stating "I am the Son of God." Jesus concluded their inability to understand was because they could not hear His word because...
Commentary · verse 44
Jesus stated they were not believers because their father was the devil!
Doctrine: There is no truth in the devil. The devil can state facts. So, truth has to be something different than facts.
- A fact is a right WHAT: knowledge. The devil puffed up in pride because of knowledge. The devil cannot create. He can only destroy. Truth is more than facts and it creates. Truth is facts that create (a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY).
- A right WHY is understanding. Understanding creates new knowledge. The devil has knowledge but no understanding. Faith is built by understanding and experience. The devil does not have faith.
- A right HOW is wisdom: an action that creates. The devil does not have wisdom.
Commentary · verses 45-47
Jesus presented a short proof: Jesus spoke truth and they did not believe. They did not prove He sinned. Those who ARE of God have the ability to understand God's Words. So it must be that those who are not of God will not understand the Words of God.

22Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.
Commentary
In order to do good, to create, you would need truth in you. You would need the Right HOW/WHY as causes. Mercy and truth require faith that God is Right and Just. If you did not believe that God was Just you wouldn't have mercy on people and you would look to even out justice yourself. If you did not believe that God is truth, then you would look for truth outside of God... which is a Right WHAT (searching for truth) with a Wrong HOW/WHY (without God).
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 20-23
Doing led to profit while saying without doing led to penury. "Penury" meant "need." This meant that if you said you would do something but you did not do it, it led to unprofitability.

10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Commentary
Everyone will believe Jesus because they see Him, this is a belief based on seeing and experience. Everyone, even those who don't have truth in them, will state a fact: Jesus Christ is Lord. However, this will not be truth for some because they still won't have the Right HOW/WHY, and they still won't go to heaven. Even though you SAY that Jesus Christ is Lord on earth does not necessarily mean that it is coming out in what you DO! Your actions prove what you believe. How is what you are learning in these Doctrines affecting your beliefs/your actions?
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 10-11
Christ is exalted so highly that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. Everyone will be humble, it is up to you HOW this happens. You can humble yourself internally through understanding or you will be humbled externally through experience.

8for ye were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord: walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10proving what is well-pleasing unto the Lord;
8For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Commentary
The effect of light is goodness, righteousness, and truth. We saw goodness and righteousness are effects of Right and Just. Likewise, truth is an effect of right and just. Remember, the only way to please God is to believe that He IS and the rewarder of them that seek after Him; this is an application of faith. So, the effects of being well pleasing to God would be light, goodness, righteousness, and truth. All of these things create!
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 7-12
Our actions ("walk") prove whether or not we are believers, whether we are "children of the light." Verse 11 was the example Jesus set for us: having no fellowship with unprofitable works, but exposing them with light.

13And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, even the word of God, ye accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.
13For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
Commentary
The word of men is a Right WHAT. The word of God is different. Again, word was logos, understanding. The logos of God is a Right WHAT with at least a Right WHY and it works (results in creation) in those that have belief without seeing God, who have faith. Those who have faith the Right WHY (logos) can result in the Right HOW (wisdom).

Commentary · verse 13
The Thessalonians let the word of God (through Paul) be planted in their hearts.
5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Commentary
Thomas asked HOW. Jesus responded with a famous statement. Then He gave the HOW and WHY, which proved HE is the Truth. Everything in this passage is about thinking/knowing. Thomas thought that in order to go the way he would have to see Jesus physically, this was belief because of seeing.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 4-6
Triple Doctrine: Jesus is the (one and only) way (journey), the truth (creator), and the life (the ability to repair). The ultimate effect of these three statements is: no man gets to the Father except by Jesus.
- Jesus is the truth: the right WHAT with the right HOW/WHY. Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection was the right action (humility) done with the right HOW (without sin) and for the right WHY (love).
- Jesus is the life: the ability to repair. Repair requires creation, which can only be done with truth. We are sinners. We need Repair in order to spend eternity in fellowship with God.
- Jesus is the way: our journey taking direction from God can only be done because of Jesus being the truth and the life. No one can come to God the Father unless it is done by Jesus and what He had provided.
Commentary · verse 7
Doctrine: The Disciples having seen Jesus could also state they had seen God. Jesus and the Father are both Right and Just in their Nature. If you know Jesus, you know the Father.
7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.
7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Commentary
Again, Jesus demonstrated Truth (HOW/WHY) when He spoke of the Spirit of Truth. He told the disciples WHY He was leaving, WHY it would be to their detriment if He stayed, and HOW the Spirit would come to take Jesus' place.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verse 7
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit could not come unless Jesus went away. It was good that Jesus went away so that He could send the Comforter.
13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.
13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Commentary
Jesus gave the HOW/WHY. Also, the Spirit of Truth can give future WHAT's because He understands the causes: the HOW/WHY. Do you remember what rhema meant?
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verse 13
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit would guide believers into all truth and would show believers things to come.
43For there is no good tree that bringeth forth corrupt fruit; nor again a corrupt tree that bringeth forth good fruit.
44For each tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
45The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: 48he is like a man building a house, who digged and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well builded.
49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation; against which the stream brake, and straightway it fell in; and the ruin of that house was great.
43For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
44For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
45A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Commentary
Jesus stated those who are good speak the right WHAT and DO (HOW) because (WHY) they have a good treasure in their heart. Everything is planted in the heart, both good and bad. The rock can be seen as truth because it is a Right HOW; a Right HOW is wisdom. Notice, Jesus presented this truth with a parable: "The good man out of the good treasure..." Jesus wasn't speaking about a situation that actually happened. Jesus was not speaking reality. Some people say "Truth is reality". The Devil quoted the Bible correctly when he tempted Jesus in the desert. Actually, Jesus spoke a lot of truth without it being reality. In fact, the next verse shows that Jesus speaking a reality would make it not the truth!

Verses 20-49: the Sermon on the Plain. Though similar in Doctrine, this was a different sermon than the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7.
Commentary · verse 44
Trees being known by their fruit was an example of the principle of causality.
Commentary · verse 45
The heart is where your actual beliefs are held and everything that you believe comes through (and is planted in) the heart. Your beliefs are the cause of your actions. Whether the treasure we bring forth is good or evil, it comes from the heart.
Commentary · verse 48
Hearing and doing the words of Christ will liken you to a wise man with a strong foundation. The rock is the deepest level, the HOW/WHY. Notice, bad circumstances come against the person who has a right HOW/WHY, and they survive the circumstances.
Commentary · verse 49
Even the foolish man heard the words of Christ but did not DO them. The foolish man heard the WHAT, but he did not build deep enough, just on the earth/sand and not deeper to the rock. This man only built his faith on the WHAT and not the HOW/WHY. Building your house on the rock is doing the Word of God...doing is the HOW/WHY. When bad circumstances occurred to this superficial believer, they were not able to remain profitable and they became unprofitable. Both people heard the Word of God (WHAT) and had bad circumstances. The one who survived the bad circumstances also had the HOW/WHY, they DID the Word of God. The conclusion was to have integrity (soundness): SAY (WHAT) and DO (HOW/WHY) ought to match. This was the same way the Sermon on the Mount culminated in Matthew 7.
Luke 4-6 covered Jesus calling His Disciples, healing people, growing in fame, and teaching according to principles.
31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
Commentary
Would Jesus state a Wrong WHAT about who He was? No. Jesus would say, "I am the Son of God." However, if Jesus stated that directly/plainly, then He wouldn't be humble (Wrong HOW) and He wouldn't be trusting God (Wrong WHY). In the Bible, a prophet never bore witness of himself. A prophet never stated to the people, "I am a prophet". So, Jesus said that if He stated a Right WHAT about Himself, His statement would not be true... because it would have a Wrong HOW/WHY!
What would you say about a group of people that crowned Jesus, knelt before Him, and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Would you say these people were honoring and/or worshiping Jesus? Actually, there was a group of people who did this Right WHAT!
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verse 31
We know that if Jesus bore witness of Himself that He would state a fact: a right WHAT. We have seen with John the Baptist that prophets could not facilitate their own purpose and progress, that would be a wrong HOW/WHY. If Jesus bore witness of Himself it would not be true! How would that be possible? Truth must be something more than stating a fact/right WHAT. If truth was only reality/fact, then Jesus would have been saying that He wouldn't have stated a reality/fact if He bore witness of Himself. We know that Jesus wouldn't have stated a wrong fact about Himself, so truth must be something more than reality/fact.
If Jesus bore witness of Himself it would be a wrong HOW/WHY, which would be why it would not be truth. Jesus would have been stating a right WHAT with a wrong HOW/WHY which would have made it not true! Truth is a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY. Deception is a right WHAT with a wrong or no HOW/WHY. Jesus would have been a deceiver if He bore witness of Himself.

However, they did this with a Wrong HOW/WHY. They did this by force in order to mock Jesus.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 27-29
Jesus was given a scarlet robe, a crown of thorns, and a reed in His right hand. The soldiers then mocked Jesus. However, notice the soldiers knelt before Jesus and proclaimed, "Hail, King of the Jews!" This was a clear example of the HOW and WHY behind our actions being more important than the WHAT. If the WHAT was more important, then these soldiers would have been praising Christ. However, their intentions were mocking and with a right WHAT and a wrong HOW and WHY…they were being evil.
Commentary · verses 30-31
Then they spit on Him and hit His head (with the thorns on it) and when they were done they led Him away to be crucified. Again, Jesus knew all of this would happen.
Closing Thoughts
We learned that it is not enough to have the Right SAY, you must also have a Right DO. Those who have their words match their actions are wise, those who do not, are hypocrites!
Also, it is not enough to have a Right WHAT, you also need a Right HOW/WHY. What is a Right WHAT with a Wrong HOW/WHY called?
People like to use this passage to say that no one knows the definition of truth. Pilate asked the question that the modern church has failed to answer for years. Those people who hear Jesus' words and create with them have heard the truth and DO the truth. If all truth is God's truth, then can I find truth outside of God and I never need him? Jesus was God's Son and everything He did created in the HOW/WHY because Jesus knew that only God was good, and only He can create. We need God whether we are aware of it or not.
