Doctrine #10: Say vs. Do
Doctrine #10
Doctrine #10 Read
I knew a man who had a father who was well versed in scripture. His father held great stature among churchgoers and the congregation where he prayed publicly esteemed him. With poetic fervor, his father would pour his heart out to God in prayer, asking for great knowledge in the Holy ways of Jesus Christ. The man's father would quote scripture to greet his brothers and sisters in the Lord. He would smile as he shook the hands of believers and non-believers alike. He would give to his neighbor clothes and food. Do you think the son saw his dad as a godly man?
That was not the full story he told me about his father. All the while, this man's father would neglect his own family. The son would feel the sting of his dad's belt, while his ears would burn with the scriptures proceeding from his father's mouth. As the doors would close the world outside, this father would become filled with rage, filled with fear, filled with evil. Do you think the son saw his dad as a godly man?
Overview
Saying the word of God is not enough. This is only a Right WHAT. God is focused on whether you do the word of God. This is a Right HOW. This is wisdom. If a person justifies himself when the discrepancy between what he says and what he does is pointed out, he is a hypocrite. Hypocrites don't go to heaven.
Discussion Question
Do you believe what you SAY is what you DO in all areas of your life?

27And they answered Jesus, and said, We know not. He also said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
28But what think ye? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in the vineyard.
29And he answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented himself, and went.
30And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
31Which of the two did the will of his father? They say, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
32For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye saw it, did not even repent yourselves afterward, that ye might believe him.
27And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
28But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
29He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
30And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
31Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
32For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

The chief priests and elders weighed both possible responses and decided not to answer, so neither did Jesus. This was Just.

Verses 28-32: the Parable of the Two Sons.
Commentary · verse 32
The parable contrasted what we SAY with what we DO. Remember, the conclusion of the "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 7:24-27) stated we need to DO the Word of God. Those who DO the Will of God will enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus blatantly gave this parable to the chief priests and elders. They must have known He was talking about them.

6Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, Neither desire thou his dainties: 7For as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.
8The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, And lose thy sweet words.
9Speak not in the hearing of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
6Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
8The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
9Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Commentary
The heart is where belief and actions come from! Good and bad can be planted in your heart. This passage said the person who only says all the right things will actually despise the wisdom of your words.
" Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man." Matthew 15:7-11)
Jesus called these people hypocrites because they SAID the right things, but didn't DO them. Like we saw in the previous Doctrine, this was equated with vain worship and teaching man-made beliefs (tradition) as God's Doctrine. Jesus then specifically told people to understand, to consciously think, to find God's WHY! We've seen the heart is where belief and actions come from. Here's another passage that showed the heart is where belief and actions come from.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 5-7
What we plant in our heart will come out in our actions: good or bad.
Commentary · verses 8-9
Those who you know that do not have understanding and do not want understanding should not be spoken to as if they did. This would be a case where you are "casting pearls before the swine." See Matthew 7:6.

8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach: 9because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: 10for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be put to shame.
8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Commentary
The word being in the heart is faith and leads to believing unto righteousness. It is good to say it, but the verse Jesus quoted said to believe was enough which is proven in DOING. What you believe is what you do! What you confess is what you say! Align them both with Christ and you will not be put to shame!
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 6-8
Paul referenced Deuteronomy 30:12-14, however, he gave an interpretation of two parts of the scripture in parentheses in verses 6 and 7. The end of the referenced scripture was the first half of verse 8: "...and in thy heart:" Paul then directly gave his interpretation of the third part: The word that Moses spoke of in the believer's mouth and in the heart (because it came out in actions) was the word of faith Paul was writing about. Why?
Commentary · verse 9
Paul stated that if we allowed the influence from the Holy Spirit through our spirit to come through our hearts (verse 8) when it came out in our actions (verse 9) we would be saved. Again, doing the Law would cause a person to accept Jesus as the Messiah.
Commentary · verse 10
Doctrine: Salvation - a choice that resulted in belief in the heart (DO, actions) and confession with the mouth (SAY, words). Notice, the person's DO and SAY would be consistent. This was Paul's premise.
Commentary · verse 11
Paul referenced Isaiah 28:16 and Isaiah 49:23.

4Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: As for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him, 5Come, eat ye of my bread, And drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6Leave off, ye simple ones, and live; And walk in the way of understanding.
4Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
Commentary
The Bible gave a lot of examples of people SAYING the right thing but not DOING the right thing. This passage said the person was simple and void of understanding; they had no WHY. Here's another example of Jesus speaking to people who SAY one thing and DO another.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 4-6
"Leave off, ye simple ones" meant to forsake the foolish. We ought to leave behind foolishness and progress in and towards understanding.

27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous, 30and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets.
32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell?
27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Commentary
Jesus said these people were outwardly beautiful, but dead inside: full of hypocrisy and sin. Jesus said these people claim they wouldn't have killed the prophets, however, Jesus said they were acting just like their fathers, and this hypocritical behavior would lead to hell.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 1-39
In this chapter, Jesus spoke to the multitude and to His Disciples regarding the scribes and the Pharisees.
Commentary · verses 13-28
The Pharisees were only focused on appearance. They were completely about effects.
Commentary · verses 29-36
The Pharisees claimed that they would not have killed the prophets as their fathers did but Jesus explained that they were their father's children and they would do the same things their fathers did (to Jesus). The Pharisees had the same causes as their fathers.

48But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth; 49and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken; 50the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, 51and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
48But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Commentary
Jesus specifically stated the portion of the hypocrites is in hell. The WHAT in this passage is a "servant," but the HOW/WHY of this servant is "evil."
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 43-51
Blessed are the servants who, even while their master is gone, continue to do their master's will.
Commentary · verse 51
It looked as if Jesus' answer to the second two questions were:
-
What shall be the sign of your coming? Jesus described signs prior to His physical return to earth at the end of the Tribulation.
-
What shall be the sign of the end of the world? Jesus' physical return is the sign of the end of the dispensation of the Law.
Matthew 22-24 covered the Pharisees discontinuing of their confrontations of Jesus and Jesus' prophecy about the end times.

24Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock: 25and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon the rock.
26And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand: 27and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.
28And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching: 29for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
28And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Commentary
Jesus concluded "The Sermon on The Mount" by stating the rock was DOING the Word of God. Most people think the rock in this story was Jesus or the Word of God (logos). In the previous Doctrine, we saw that the Word of God had no effect when mixed with tradition, but it had value when mixed with faith and the deeper why (logos & rhema). We saw the same in this parable because both people heard the word of God and had problems. However, the one who DID the word of God, who made the connection between his life and the Word of God through the deeper why with faith, was profitable/able to stand. He was wise!
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 1-29
Chapter 7 concluded the "Sermon on the Mount."
Commentary · verse 24
Hearing and doing the words of Christ will liken you to a wise man with a strong foundation. The rock is the deepest level: the HOW/WHY.
Commentary · verse 25
Notice, the rains and floods still beat upon this person. Doing Jesus' words didn't prevent trials and persecution, in fact we saw that the highest level of maturity from the beginning of this teaching (Matthew 5) stated that handling these trials and persecutions well were the ultimate proof of spiritual maturity. Here, Jesus said the same thing. The house did not fall even though trials and persecutions came.
Commentary · verse 26
Even the foolish man heard the words of Christ but did not DO them. The foolish man heard the WHAT, but he did not build deep enough, just on the sand and not deeper to the rock. This man only built his faith on the WHAT and not the HOW/WHY. Building your house on the rock is doing the Word of God...doing is the HOW/WHY.
Commentary · verse 27
When bad circumstances occurred to this superficial believer, they were not able to remain profitable and they became unprofitable. Both people heard the Word of God (WHAT) and had bad circumstances. The one who survived the bad circumstances also had the HOW/WHY...they did the Word of God. The conclusion was to have integrity (soundness): SAY (WHAT) and DO (HOW/WHY) ought to match.
Commentary · verses 28-29
These verses repeated the point of Jesus' parable that ended His teaching. The people were astonished at Jesus' Doctrine: HOW/WHY. Jesus had authority. He was a Semikah (authority) Rabbi. The people were used to Rabbis who only presented the WHAT of the Law.
Closing Thoughts
Do your actions prove what you believe? Now we have the SAY and DO pieces and we will be using this foundation in the next few Doctrines.
If someone asked you to do something you considered questionable without giving you a reason why, how would you feel?
What would it look like if someone gave their own "deeper why"?
Jesus showed it was more important to DO than to SAY. In verse 31 Jesus said that the publicans and the harlots would "go before you". "Before you" meant in your place, and before your eyes. The DOers go to heaven, not the SAYers.
