Doctrine #35 Read
What would it take for you to change your beliefs?
We learned that it is impossible to please God without faith. If we have faith we believe that God "Is" and that He rewards us when we seek after Him. Would that ever mean that you could BE God? No. So, if you are not God, how would you be able to be more Right than Him? You will never be. Have you ever been right about anything? Yes. So, you can never be more Right than God, but you can still be right. That must mean there are two different scenarios in regards to being right. We can be right, and God is Right. What are the effects?
Overview
Righteousness is the effect of being right. When we are right, the effect is righteousness that leads to reward. When God is Right, the effect is Righteousness that leads to salvation.
Discussion Question
Do you believe you measure righteousness based on your own opinion or God's view?

11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, even the lake of fire.
15And if any was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Commentary
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 11-15
Summary of verses 11-15: There will be two judgments. There will be a Reward Judgment (according to works in books) and a Salvation Judgment (according to one book: the Book of Life).
Everyone will be judged according to all their works, all the works they did of themselves whether good or bad. This will be the only moment in history that Justice is completely equaled out. It will be done in front of everyone proving God is Just.
Some people think we will all have the same amount of Reward. They say that because they know there will not be any jealousy in heaven, and they think the way to do that is through the man-made concept of denying uniqueness. Actually, it would be unjust for everyone to have the same Reward when some people deserve more and some people deserve less. Jesus told us to store up treasure (Reward) in heaven (Matthew 6:20). In fact, earlier in Matthew 6 Jesus said some people get their Reward on earth and others get their Reward in heaven. There will not be jealousy over people having different amounts of Reward because people will know it is Just for some people to have more Reward than them and some to have less.
Also, the Reward judgment occurs first. Then the Salvation judgment. There will be people with Reward who do not make the Salvation judgment. What happens to their Reward? Again, people, in hopes of denying uniqueness, want to say that Reward is given to those who do not have much to get everyone closer to the same amount of Reward. Actually, according to the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), those with the most get the left over Reward, making the difference of Reward between people even greater.
Finally, notice that everyone that does not pass the Salvation judgment will be cast in the lake of fire. One of the places people could spend eternity is the lake of fire. The Bible ended with "bad people go to the lake of fire"...not "bad people go to hell."
Next, we will find out the other place people can spend eternity, which is why the last two chapters (21 and 22) are denoted by the "21,22" in the final section of the diagram which represented eternity.
1Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Commentary
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 1-34
The "Sermon on the Mount" continued. In this chapter, Jesus got more specific as to how to intentionally gain Reward.
Commentary · verse 1
Notice, the "reward" Jesus spoke of could not be Salvation. If it was, then "giving in front of others" would cause you to lose your Salvation. When Jesus spoke of "reward," He was speaking of spiritual value/treasure, which we will refer to as Reward.
Revelation 20:12-15 stated there will be two judgments. One will be a Salvation Judgment and will be done according to Righteousness (grace) with one book: the Book of Life. The other judgment will be a Reward Judgment and will be done according to Justice with books. This chapter from Matthew dealt exclusively with the actions that impact the Reward Judgment. Notice the emphasis of Justice throughout this chapter.

8Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
Commentary
It is in your control how much you want to work, and your reward is based on your own work. This is a physical example of something spiritual. Do you remember what a "workman" is?

However, those who "plant" and those who "water" will be Rewarded through Justice as will all men according to their labor.

5Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou wast wroth, and we sinned: in them have we been of long time; and shall we be saved?
6For we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
5Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
6But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Commentary
Our righteousness is nothing compared to God's Righteousness. Our works can never produce enough for us to earn salvation. Some people will interpret this text to mean that we are totally depraved, and there is nothing at all that we can do that is righteous. This is wrong. Works produce reward, and our reward is something that we can store up and produce. There are actions and decisions that we can do/make (we have been given the Mind of Christ) that are righteous, but they will result in reward, not salvation. We are not totally depraved.
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 5-6
The righteousness of our works was as a "polluted garment" compared to the Righteousness from God (grace). God's Righteousness led to Salvation. Our righteousness led to Reward, but has no effect on our Salvation.
20For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.
20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Commentary
The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees wasn't enough to get to heaven; there was never enough that they could do to earn salvation. The only way for your righteousness to exceed the most diligent of religious leaders is if it is God's Righteousness through you. What would it look like for God's Righteousness to flow through you?
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verses 1-48
This chapter began what was referred to as "The Sermon on the Mount." This was Jesus' premier teaching.
Commentary · verses 18-20
Our Righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees in order to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
This usage of "kingdom of heaven" was referring to eternal paradise with God. The "righteousness" here was God's Righteousness through you via the Holy Spirit: grace.

1Brethren, my heart’s desire and my supplication to God is for them, that they may be saved.
2For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
3For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
4For Christ is the end of the law unto righteousness to every one that believeth.
5For Moses writeth that the man that doeth the righteousness which is of the law shall live thereby.
6But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:) 7or, Who shall descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)
8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach: 9because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: 10for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
1Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
2For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
3For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
5For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
6But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
7Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Commentary
God's Righteousness leads to salvation, not our righteousness. In the Law, it was the individual who had the responsibility to be righteous and follow the Law, this was a work. Now we have access to God's Righteousness, because of Jesus' fulfillment of the Law. We are able to think as God Thinks, and now the mystery has been revealed to us by the Law being upon our hearts, through the Holy Spirit. Do you have the same causes as God?
Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage
Commentary · verse 1
Chapter 9 began with Paul's sorrow for the Jews not being saved. This chapter began with Paul's desire that the Jews be saved.
Commentary · verse 2
Paul stated the Jews had the right attitude/emotion, but it was not based on the correct factual information. Remember, Paul's critical cause in Romans 1:21 was that people did not recognize the value within God, in other words, they did not glorify God. Not having the correct factual information would affect a person's ability to think well of God as a result of recognizing His intrinsic value (glory).
Commentary · verse 3
The Jews did not know about God's Righteousness by grace, so they focused on righteousness in their own strength.
Commentary · verse 4
Paul's premise: Jesus Christ was the ultimate effect of the Law. Everyone who followed the Law correctly ought to have accepted Jesus as the Messiah.
Commentary · verse 5
Paul referenced Leviticus 18:5. Paul emphasized the most important thing: doing the Law, not only hearing the Law. Paul showed that doing the Law would have resulted in accepting Jesus as the Messiah.
Commentary · verses 6-8
Paul referenced Deuteronomy 30:12-14, however, he gave an interpretation of two parts of the scripture in parentheses in verses 6 and 7. The end of the referenced scripture was the first half of verse 8: "...and in thy heart:" Paul then directly gave his interpretation of the third part: The word that Moses spoke of in the believer's mouth and in the heart (because it came out in actions) was the word of faith Paul was writing about. Why?
Commentary · verse 9
Paul stated that if we allowed the influence from the Holy Spirit through our spirit to come through our hearts (verse 8) when it came out in our actions (verse 9) we would be saved. Again, doing the Law would cause a person to accept Jesus as the Messiah.
Commentary · verse 10
Doctrine: Salvation - a choice that resulted in belief in the heart (DO, actions) and confession with the mouth (SAY, words). Notice, the person's DO and SAY would be consistent. This was Paul's premise.
8Distil, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, that it may bring forth salvation, and let it cause righteousness to spring up together; I, Jehovah, have created it.
8Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it.

Closing Thoughts
God's Righteousness and salvation go hand in hand. We understand what it means to be righteous and how God will use that to reward us through justice/works. Now, we are working our way towards understanding salvation.
You have heard it said that salvation is for the elect, for the people who God chooses. But, what if we had the choice? Do we have the ability to choose God, or can He only choose us? Why would God choose some and not others?
There are two judgements. In verse 12 the "books" were opened. Those books were multiple books of reward/works. God is Just and He has an account for everything that we have ever done. The second book was singular. This is the book of life, which is salvation.
