God's Will

Doctrine #58: Meaning of Life

Doctrine #58 Read

The Mystery has been revealed. We all have access to Grace through the Holy Spirit.

What is God's Spirit bringing us towards? What is the purpose of Life? If you believe in Causality, you have to believe that God was The First Cause. If He is, why did He make us? What is the meaning of life?

Overview

The meaning of life is church and marriage. God's purpose is to create a Bride for His Son. Church is the ultimate community solely made up of people (even though God can be a part of it). The ultimate community is marriage because God is involved. The meaning of life is the church (one type of ultimate community) in the ultimate community (marriage covenant with Jesus and God the Father).

Discussion Question

Do you believe we can know the meaning of life?

Revelation 19:1-21

1After these things I heard as it were a great voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, Hallelujah; Salvation, and glory, and power, belong to our God: 2for true and righteous are his judgments; for he hath judged the great harlot, her that corrupted the earth with her fornication, and he hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

3And a second time they say, Hallelujah. And her smoke goeth up for ever and ever.

4And the four and twenty elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God that sitteth on the throne, saying, Amen; Hallelujah.

5And a voice came forth from the throne, saying, Give praise to our God, all ye his servants, ye that fear him, the small and the great.

6And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunders, saying, Hallelujah: for the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigneth.

7Let us rejoice and be exceeding glad, and let us give the glory unto him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

8And it was given unto her that she should array herself in fine linen, bright and pure: for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

9And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they that are bidden to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are true words of God.

10And I fell down before his feet to worship him. And he saith unto me, See thou do it not: I am a fellow-servant with thee and with thy brethren that hold the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

11And I saw the heaven opened; and behold, a white horse, and he that sat thereon called Faithful and True; and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

12And his eyes are a flame of fire, and upon his head are many diadems; and he hath a name written which no one knoweth but he himself.

13And he is arrayed in a garment sprinkled with blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

14And the armies which are in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and pure.

15And out of his mouth proceedeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

16And he hath on his garment and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

17And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in mid heaven, Come and be gathered together unto the great supper of God; 18that ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses and of them that sit thereon, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, and small and great.

19And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat upon the horse, and against his army.

20And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought the signs in his sight, wherewith he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and them that worshipped his image: they two were cast alive into the lake of fire that burneth with brimstone: 21and the rest were killed with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, even the sword which came forth out of his mouth: and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

1And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

2For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

3And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

4And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

5And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

6And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

7Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

8And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

9And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

10And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

11And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

12His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

13And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

17And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

18That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

19And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

20And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

21And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

Commentary

The next four passages documented how the Bible ended...

There is a Bride, but the identity is not known. Jesus is the Groom. We know the Bride is made up of believers: people who are saved by grace through faith. The Bride is humble, because she recognizes that God's Righteousness has saved Her (He gets the glory), and the linen She is adorned in is because of Her righteousness: Her works and reward for living by grace through faith. Jesus was called the Word of God in this passage and will defeat Evil with the two edged sword that comes from His Mouth! What was the sword? Rhema! Rhema was the revelatory Word of God that brought wisdom. It's all words!

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-2

God is Right and Just! The beast system was destroyed.

Commentary · verses 3-6

In the King James Version, the word "omnipotent" was used instead of "Almighty." In fact, it was the only usage of the word "omnipotent" in the entire Bible. In the American Standard Version, the word was "Almighty."

**The definition for both words, Omnipotent and "Almighty", was "the all-ruling."

**The words "Omnipotent" and "Almighty" did not mean "all powerful; the being who can do anything."

**It did mean "the only being that rules; the ultimate authority; the being that answers to no one."

The context of the verse pointed to God beginning the process of being the only ruler. God being Right and Just is separate from God being the all-ruling. For example, a dictator is omnipotent over his country, but that does not make him Right and Just. We ought to be comforted by the fact that God is omnipotent and Right and Just: we are ruled by the Right and Just One!

Commentary · verse 7

The Marriage of the Lamb is near. The Wife had made herself ready. Notice, the identity of the Bride was not disclosed yet, but we know it will be the Church.

Commentary · verse 8

The fine linen worn by the Bride was a representation of the Righteousness of the saints.

Commentary · verse 9

In the Bible, a wedding was a feast, not a ceremony done in church. Consequently, "the marriage supper" is the wedding of Jesus to His Bride.

Commentary · verse 10

Summary of verses 1-10: There will be a Bride clothed in the Righteous acts of the saints, but John had not divulged Her identity. If this were a movie, the camera would pan up the back of the Bride in Her wedding dress and stop before reaching Her Face.

Commentary · verses 11-15

This was Jesus (The Word of God) coming to the battle of Armageddon. The sword proceeding from His Mouth will be used to smite nations and rule them with a rod of iron. This was rhema: the powerful and revelatory word of God without precedent. Jesus fights with words: spiritual warfare. As we saw in Revelation 14:18, He treads the winepress.

Commentary · verse 16

Summary of verses 11-16: The Groom was Jesus who smites the nations with a sharp sword that proceeds out of His Mouth: spiritual warfare with words. This was Jesus in His pure, unfiltered, unadjusted Nature: Conquering King!

Commentary · verses 17-18

An angel shouted for the birds to have a great supper (due to the carcasses there will be after the battle). This is the battle of Armageddon...

Commentary · verses 19-21

Summary of verses 17-21: The Antichrist and the false prophet were cast into the lake of fire and the rest of the people that came to Armageddon were killed with the words Jesus spoke. This concluded the seven year Tribulation, also known as the Seventieth Week of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27) which was the last seven years of the Dispensation of the Law. This was the conclusion of the re-establishing of the 5th Dispensation. All that was left to deal with was Satan.

Commentary · verse 21

The next chapter documented the events from the beginning to end of the Millennial Reign and is denoted by the "20" and an arrow.

Revelation 20:1-15

Chapter

Changes this passage only. Set your default for every passage.

1And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.

2And he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years should be finished: after this he must be loosed for a little time.

4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as worshipped not the beast, neither his image, and received not the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they lived, and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5The rest of the dead lived not until the thousand years should be finished. This is the first resurrection.

6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: over these the second death hath no power; but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

7And when the thousand years are finished, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8and shall come forth to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

9And they went up over the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down out of heaven, and devoured them.

10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where are also the beast and the false prophet; and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, even the lake of fire.

15And if any was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

1And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

7And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

8And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

9And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Commentary

Satan is locked up for 1000 years and those people who died for Jesus because they preached the Word of God (truth) will rule with Jesus for 1000 years. Then Satan is released, and not only does he deceive the nations, but he is also deceived. Satan has animal thinking and will not understand why he was released, but he will continue to deceive the nations and the evil he causes will eventually destroy him! Then there will be the Final Judgment where everyone will be judged if they have accepted salvation or not, and those who have gained reward and those that have not. You will not get your reward if you do not have God's causes, His Righteousness: salvation!

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-3

Satan was cast into the bottomless pit and was sealed so he could not deceive the nations until the 1000 years was finished. Satan will be set free for a "little time" at the end of Christ's Millennial reign.

Commentary · verse 3

Disclaimer: What follows is an explanation that is possible, but by no means proven. If this explanation does not help you or make sense, continue reading verse 4...

"Notice, the 7th Dispensation consists of Satan being locked up. This "Sabbath" dispensation consists of everyone getting a 1000 year rest from Satan. People who lack disease, poverty, and war will have to be shown the benefits of taking direction from God because they will not have any "problems," Satan is locked up. However, this would also be the perfect time for everyone who has ever been conceived to be witnessed to by those who have been saved. The point is not where (earth or heaven) these people are witnessed to or who (martyrs or saints in heaven) witnesses to them. The point is that every person who was conceived and not born...and every person who was not able to make a conscious decision for God because of their age, mental ability, or even location would be able to make this decision during this rest from Satan. The number of people this entailed could be enormous, even on the order of hundreds of billions."

Commentary · verse 4

The martyrs were judged and reigned with Jesus during the Millennium. During the Millennium, the martyrs will serve as "grace" to people who live on earth during this 1000 years. The Jewish believers who hid in Moab and Edom will be the only people on earth who enter the Millennium. Now we see that everyone was "saved by grace through faith"...it's just the method that God influenced the heart of the individual was different for each dispensation:

  • During the 1st Dispensation (Eden) God influenced Adam and Eve face to face;
  • by angels during the 2nd Dispensation;
  • by verbal (spoken and written) means during the 3rd Dispensation;
  • by the patriarchs (Israel) during the 4th Dispensation;
  • by the Law during the 5th Dispensation;
  • by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit during the current (6th) dispensation; and
  • by martyrs during the 7th Dispensation.

Commentary · verses 5-6

Summary of verses 1-6: Satan was locked up for 1000 years while Christ reigns on earth with the martyrs. The 1000 years Christ reigns is the 7th Dispensation: The Millennium.

Commentary · verses 7-10

The "lake of fire" will be the final destination for those who are eternally tormented.

Commentary · verse 10

Summary of verses 7-10: When Satan is loosed at the end of the 1000 year reign, he deceives many of the descendants of the Jewish believers who entered into the Millennium from Moab and Edom. God defeats this group with fire coming down from heaven. God sends Satan into the lake of fire with the Antichrist and the false prophet. This next section covered the Final Judgment also known as The Great White Throne Judgment...

Commentary · verses 11-15

Summary of verses 11-15: There will be two judgments. There will be a Reward Judgment (according to works in books) and a Salvation Judgment (according to one book: the Book of Life).

Everyone will be judged according to all their works, all the works they did of themselves whether good or bad. This will be the only moment in history that Justice is completely equaled out. It will be done in front of everyone proving God is Just.

Some people think we will all have the same amount of Reward. They say that because they know there will not be any jealousy in heaven, and they think the way to do that is through the man-made concept of denying uniqueness. Actually, it would be unjust for everyone to have the same Reward when some people deserve more and some people deserve less. Jesus told us to store up treasure (Reward) in heaven (Matthew 6:20). In fact, earlier in Matthew 6 Jesus said some people get their Reward on earth and others get their Reward in heaven. There will not be jealousy over people having different amounts of Reward because people will know it is Just for some people to have more Reward than them and some to have less.

Also, the Reward judgment occurs first. Then the Salvation judgment. There will be people with Reward who do not make the Salvation judgment. What happens to their Reward? Again, people, in hopes of denying uniqueness, want to say that Reward is given to those who do not have much to get everyone closer to the same amount of Reward. Actually, according to the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), those with the most get the left over Reward, making the difference of Reward between people even greater.

Finally, notice that everyone that does not pass the Salvation judgment will be cast in the lake of fire. One of the places people could spend eternity is the lake of fire. The Bible ended with "bad people go to the lake of fire"...not "bad people go to hell."

Next, we will find out the other place people can spend eternity, which is why the last two chapters (21 and 22) are denoted by the "21,22" in the final section of the diagram which represented eternity.

Revelation 21:1-27

Chapter

Changes this passage only. Set your default for every passage.

1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth are passed away; and the sea is no more.

2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

3And I heard a great voice out of the throne saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he shall dwell with them, and they shall be his peoples, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God: 4and he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: the first things are passed away.

5And he that sitteth on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he saith, Write: for these words are faithful and true.

6And he said unto me, They are come to pass. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

7He that overcometh shall inherit these things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

8But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

9And there came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, who were laden with the seven last plagues; and he spake with me, saying, Come hither, I will show thee the bride, the wife of the Lamb.

10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God: her light was like unto a stone most precious, as it were a jasper stone, clear as crystal: 12having a wall great and high; having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13on the east were three gates; and on the north three gates; and on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15And he that spake with me had for a measure a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

16And the city lieth foursquare, and the length thereof is as great as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs: the length and the breadth and the height thereof are equal.

17And he measured the wall thereof, a hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel.

18And the building of the wall thereof was jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto pure glass.

19The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; 20the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.

21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the several gates was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

22And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God the Almighty, and the Lamb, are the temple thereof.

23And the city hath no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine upon it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamp thereof is the Lamb.

24And the nations shall walk amidst the light thereof: and the kings of the earth bring their glory into it.

25And the gates thereof shall in no wise be shut by day (for there shall be no night there): 26and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it: 27and there shall in no wise enter into it anything unclean, or he that maketh an abomination and a lie: but only they that are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

6And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

7He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

9And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

10And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

11Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

12And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

13On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

16And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

17And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

18And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.

19And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;

20The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

22And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

23And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

24And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

25And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

26And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

27And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Commentary

The new Jerusalem is called the Bride. The new Jerusalem is also called God's House. The Greek word that we get our word "cells" from meant "rooms". We will occupy rooms in God's House that make up cells in the Body of the Bride. The description of the new Jerusalem was the Church of Believers. Believers are those who are "athirst" for Life. The new Jerusalem was a picture of repair. The old heaven, old earth, and the first things will all pass away. We have a taste of that now when we think of growth. Even the good things that we produce, God will still prune back to make more, in order that we become more profitable. The first way, which is still good and still profitable, will pass so that there can be more fruit!

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

The current heaven and current earth will pass away. They will not be remodeled or improved. They will be taken apart atom by atom and never exist again, because they have been defiled by Satan. Also, heaven no longer needs to hold all the angels and believers prior to the battle of Armageddon, it will have a different purpose. Apparently, the earth will have a different purpose because it no longer has a sea. From Genesis 2:22, Eve was the last creation by God before this verse. In Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, we saw that every creation made by God was more complicated than the previous creation. God created a new heaven and a new earth. These creations were more complicated than Eve.

Commentary · verse 2

This stated the new Jerusalem came down from heaven of God and was made ready, as a bride. The new Jerusalem is the Bride. Notice, this city is not "New Jerusalem." This city is Jerusalem, the new version. This was the final creation recorded in the Bible. This was the most complicated creation: The Bride.

Commentary · verse 3

The new Jerusalem was also referred to as the tabernacle or house of God. In John 14:1-4, Jesus stated He was going away to prepare an eternal place for believers, which He called His Father's house. In it, there were many mansions. Hebrews 3:6 stated that Christ was the Son over His own house, "whose house are we"...the believers. Finally, in John 14:23, Jesus said that the Father and the Son would make their abode with believers. Now we see that the new Jerusalem will be the eternal dwelling place for believers, and it will be on the new earth. So, everyone will either spend eternity in the lake of fire or on earth in the new Jerusalem.

Recall the Disclaimer discussion from the previous chapter, everyone will exist forever in either the lake of fire or the new earth. What happens to those who died without being able to intentionally make a choice to be for or against God? God is always completely Right and always completely Just. God would not send these people to eternal torment through no fault of their own. However, God would not bring these people into the new Jerusalem against their will. There appeared to have to be a moment when these people would be able to make a choice prior to Final Judgment. Since people will not die in childbirth during the Millennium, there will not be the issue of people not being able to make this choice coming from the 7th Dispensation. It would seem the time for God to give the people from the first six dispensations to make their choice would be during the 7th Dispensation.

Commentary · verse 4

Summary of verses 1-4: A new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem were created. The new Jerusalem was referred to as the Bride and the tabernacle/house of God. Believers will inhabit the new Jerusalem. The Greek root for the word cell was room. The new Jerusalem is a Bride made up of many cells (rooms the size of mansions). The believers will occupy each cell bringing life to the Bride. Every cell in the body of the Bride will desire Jesus because every cell contains a believer. Every cell in Jesus' body desired the Bride as we saw in Hebrews 12:2 that Christ left heaven to endure the cross because of the joy set before Him. The joy that Jesus did not have in heaven before He endured the cross, and the reason He endured the cross was to facilitate the creation of the Bride.

Do you remember what was taught as the "Meaning of Life" from Paul's Letter to the Ephesians?:

"All believers interact with each other as "cells in the body" of the Bride which is married to Jesus."

Commentary · verses 5-6

The word "fountain" in this verse was the same word used in John 4:14 where Jesus said to the lady at the well that He would give this same fountain to believers. In that passage, we saw Jesus was referring to grace, which leads to Salvation.

Commentary · verses 7-8

Notice, everyone will exist forever, however those in the lake of fire were said to experience the "second death" while those in the new Jerusalem experienced eternal life. Clearly, life is "the ability to repair."

Those in the lake of fire will not be able to repair. Those in the new Jerusalem will be able to repair for eternity. Every day in the lake of fire will be the worst day that person will have ever experienced because they cannot repair. Every day in the new Jerusalem will be the best day that person has ever experienced because they can repair which means it will result in something more.

Two verses that contrasted the two locations that were predestinated for everyone: believers will be children of God through their Marriage to Jesus and unbelievers will be cast into the lake of fire. Predestinated meant "to limit in advance." God limited in advance the eternal location of every person to two possible locations. However, this did not mean God determined which location each person would spend for eternity. God places them in either location in response to the choices of the individual. God selects people (the elect) for eternal life in response to their choices.

Commentary · verse 9

One of the angels of the bowls offered to blatantly show John the Bride, the Lamb's Wife...

Commentary · verse 10

This verse blatantly called the new Jerusalem the Bride of Christ.

Summary of verses 5-10: The new Jerusalem is Jesus' Bride. Everyone that has ever existed will either spend eternity in the lake of fire or in the new Jerusalem on the new earth.

Commentary · verses 11-12

The twelve gates of the new Jerusalem had twelve angels. The names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates.

Commentary · verses 13-14

The wall of the city has twelve foundations with the names of the twelve Apostles of Christ. Hebrews 13:14 stated that we currently have no continuing city, but we seek one to come, the new Jerusalem.

Commentary · verses 15-16

Definition: "twelve thousand furlongs" equals 1500 miles. This is half the size of the United States. Imagine dividing the United States in an eastern and a western half. Then imagine one of those halves being the base of the new Jerusalem and the height also being 1500 miles. Since Jesus will be at the top and seen by all, the structure will probably resemble a pyramid more than a cube. The new Jerusalem now looked even more like a Body. In our body, each cell takes direction from three possible sources:

  1. adjoining cells,

  2. local area center, and

  3. the brain.

Ephesians 5 stated that we the Church would be married to Jesus in eternity. Ephesians 4 described how the Church would build up its Body: by speaking the truth in love to each other. Eternity began with Final Judgment which will be the only day when everything will be equaled out. After that day, every interaction in the Body of the Bride will result in an injustice: someone owing someone else. If God's mercy ended, He would have to instantly equal out every interaction. However, God's mercy enduring forever, God's lack of equaling out Justice forever, will result in believers loving each other in order to equal out Justice. This loving each other will actually result in the building up of the Body, just like Paul described in Ephesians 4.

These mansions will be stacked on top of each other. For instance, if we assume that the new Jerusalem will be a regular pyramid and each mansion will have a one mile by one mile base with a one mile height, the bottom layer of the new Jerusalem would have 2,250,000 mansions. If each mansion continued to have the same dimensions and were stacked on top of each other, the total number of mansions would be over 1.1 billion mansions. In order for the number of mansions to approximate the number of cells in our physical bodies, the mansions would need to be about 1/4 mile in length, width, and height. In Luke's presentation of the Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:12-28), Jesus stated at the end, those who entered into paradise were put over cities, in proportion to their talents (Reward). Perhaps the reason Jesus told us to store up treasure in heaven now was so that we would end up over more cities/mansions in the new Jerusalem.

Taking this thought in conjunction with the Disclaimer discussion, a large percentage of the occupants of the new Jerusalem will make up the first dozen layers. If these people were at this level because they had very little Reward, where would they come from? One possibility is these layers would consist of everyone who ever existed and was not able to make an intentional choice to follow God prior to the "first death," and then subsequently made the decision to take direction from God.

Look at this Body in light of everything written in the previous comment: a mansion will interact with the adjoining mansions on the same level. In addition, each mansion will lead the mansions under it and take direction from the mansion(s) over it. Finally, everyone will be taking direction from Jesus who is the Head of the Bride. God's mercy endures forever so we can edify (build up) the Body by speaking the truth in love to each other. Justice will never be equaled out again, and that is a good thing.

Commentary · verse 17

The wall of the new Jerusalem will be about 216 ft. high.

Commentary · verse 18

Pure gold is so soft it can be shaped by hand (and body oils actually corrode it). In fact, gold is so soft and strong it can be pounded so thin that you can see through it.

Commentary · verses 19-21

This verse is the source of the often quoted phrase: "streets of gold." Notice, all of the barriers between mansions (walls and streets) are of gold so thin you can see through it. In our bodies, each cell wall is made up of the thinnest layer of oil, literally a molecule in thickness. When oil is present in lump quantities, it flows and has no structure. However, an oil molecule by itself is very rigid and acts as strong as iron.

Commentary · verse 22

Further proof the new Jerusalem is the tabernacle/house of God.

Commentary · verse 23

There will be no need for the sun or moon because the Glory of God and Christ will be the light. Christ is the Head and occupies the top. His light is so powerful and able to be seen (through thin gold walls) that everyone experiences "day time."

Commentary · verses 24-25

There will be no night.

Commentary · verses 26-27

This chapter presented the Meaning of Life. The Meaning of Life is Church and Marriage. God's purpose is to create a Bride for His Son. Church is the ultimate community solely made up of people (even though God can be part of it). The Ultimate community is Marriage because God is involved. The Meaning of Life is Church (one type of community) in the Ultimate Community (Marriage Covenant with Jesus and God the Father). There were many verses that pointed to Jesus being the Groom and the Church being the Bride: Matthew 9:14-15, Mark 2:19-20, Luke 5:33-35, John 3:29 (John the Baptist was referred to as the "best man"), and Matthew 25:1-10.

1And he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, 2in the midst of the street thereof. And on this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve manner of fruits, yielding its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

3And there shall be no curse any more: and the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be therein: and his servants shall serve him; 4and they shall see his face; and his name shall be on their foreheads.

5And there shall be night no more; and they need no light of lamp, neither light of sun; for the Lord God shall give them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

6And he said unto me, These words are faithful and true: and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show unto his servants the things which must shortly come to pass.

7And behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he that keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book.

8And I John am he that heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel that showed me these things.

9And he saith unto me, See thou do it not: I am a fellow-servant with thee and with thy brethren the prophets, and with them that keep the words of this book: worship God.

10And he saith unto me, Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book; for the time is at hand.

11He that is unrighteous, let him do unrighteousness still: and he that is filthy, let him be made filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him do righteousness still: and he that is holy, let him be made holy still.

12Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to each man according as his work is.

13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

14Blessed are they that wash their robes, that they may have the right to come to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.

15Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.

16I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star.

17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come: he that will, let him take the water of life freely.

18I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book: 19and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.

20He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus.

21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with the saints. Amen.

1And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

2In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

3And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

4And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

5And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

6And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.

7Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

8And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.

9Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

11He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

12And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

14Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

15For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

16I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

20He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

21The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Commentary

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were barred from eating from the tree of life because they justified themselves instead of justifying God, this was the original sin. In the new Jerusalem those who have washed their robes may justly come to eat of the tree of Life. We make the decision in regards to our robe being washed or not; it is a statement of our own free will to allow God to purify us in Holiness. This was the last passage of the Bible and God told us the mystery: He is making a Bride from believers. Those who change the message, by adding or taking away from the words recorded here, will lose their right to be in the Bride (which was the church) in marriage with Jesus. May the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life be with those who are diligently seeking to please God through faith. Actually, this mystery was presented in several passages. Here were some of them...

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

The last chapter of the Bible began with a reference to grace: The water of life that proceeds from God and the Lamb.

Commentary · verse 2

The tree of life will have twelve fruits which will be yielded every month and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Two points:

  • First, time does not cease in eternity. At the very least, it is measured in months.
  • Second, we currently sleep in order to repair as much as possible. In eternity, we will not sleep because it is always day, however, we will still have the need to repair which will occur through the fruits from the tree of life.

Remember, Adam and Eve were prevented from eating from this tree by angels. If they had eaten of this tree they would have had eternal life. In fact, notice what we have here at the end of the Bible in eternity: a Husband, a Wife, a river, a tree of life - paradise: the new Eden. The Bible ended the way it began. God's initial Will was for Adam and Eve to exist forever in the Garden of Eden. They lost this ability when they justified themselves. They expressed their will to act according to their own nature. The way to exist forever in the new Eden will be to express your will to act according to God's Nature (and in opposition to your own nature), which is grace.

Commentary · verses 3-4

Some people believe that Jesus cannot be God because He and God the Father would fight in eternity over the throne. However, God the Father rested from His works on the seventh day: Genesis 2:1-3. He gave up His occupation of being a First Cause when He gave man dominion. In Hebrews 4 the entrance into paradise comes to those who rest from their works just as God rested from His works. Believers must cease from their occupation of being a first cause and take direction from the Holy Spirit via grace. In eternity, everyone will look to Jesus as the Leader. This will be the Kingdom of Jesus, which is also known as the Kingdom of God because Jesus is God. Kings ruling until the day they die is a man-made concept. However, Numbers 8:23-26 showed that God had the priests work until fifty years of age and then retire from the warfare of service and help those priests under fifty years old lead the people. Likewise, God the Father retires and His Son (Jesus) will be in charge of the Kingdom.

Commentary · verse 5

John blatantly stated there will be no night or sun because Jesus shall provide the light.

The summary of verses 1-5 were the big picture explanation for eternity: There will be a new Eden. Next, John concluded his narrative.

Commentary · verses 6-7

Another blessing was pronounced relative to this book. This time, the blessing was for those who kept the words of this book.

Commentary · verses 8-10

John was told to not seal the prophecies of this book, which was why we are able to read this information.

Commentary · verse 11

This verse stated that as a person dies that is how they will remain for eternity. There is no second chance after death to confess and repent.

Commentary · verse 12

Everyone will be recompensed, both good and bad, for everything they have done from their own strength, which is the Reward judgment.

Commentary · verses 13-15

Again, there are only two places you can exist in eternity: the new Jerusalem on the new earth or the lake of fire.

Commentary · verse 16

Summary of verses 6-16: The words of this book were not to be sealed up but shared to encourage us to make it into the new Jerusalem.

Commentary · verse 17

Definition: "he that will" meant that whoever expressed their will was able to do this. No one is prevented from living eternally in the new Jerusalem. God has made all the provisions and we are all invited. Grace has been provided via the Holy Spirit because of Christ's sacrificial death on the cross. If we end up in the lake of fire it is because it is our decision.

Commentary · verses 18-19

This warning was specifically about the Book of Revelation, not about the Bible which was canonized by man. Many people use these verses to show that the Apocrypha was not divinely inspired. Is it possible that God divinely inspired other writings during "biblical times"? What about today?

Commentary · verse 20

What followed was the last sentence of the Bible. Notice, this last chapter of the Bible began and concluded with references to grace...

Commentary · verse 21

Summary of verses 17-21: The Holy Spirit and the Bride encouraged us to live eternally in the new Jerusalem and not experience the second death in the lake of fire.

The Book of Revelation was the final book of the Bible. It was written by John from the island of Patmos around 96 AD. This would have been about five years after his epistles. In much the same way the Book of Daniel was the main prophetic book for those who lived during the Dispensation of the Law, this book was the main prophetic book for those who live during our current dispensation. This book had four sections relative to chronology. The first section was made up of the first three chapters which documented events prior to the Tribulation. The second section was made up of the next three chapters which presented a big picture perspective of events in order from the beginning of the Tribulation to the end of the Tribulation. The third section was the largest and most confusing section. In twelve chapters, the events of the Tribulation were presented from several different perspectives, resulting in a layered presentation of the Tribulation. The fourth and final section consisted of four chapters that presented, in chronological order, events from the end of the Tribulation through eternity. This book presented the Meaning of Life which is Church and Marriage. This book ended where the Bible began: a Husband, a Wife, a river, and a tree of life in paradise, which you can now review through the following link...

Commentary · verses 14-15

Jesus called Himself the "bridegroom." Jesus was pointing towards eternity and the Doctrine of Marriage. The phrase: "sons of the bridechamber" represented the people who would be present in the bridechamber where the Marriage Covenant was completed. Jesus is the Groom. Believers, together as the Church, are the Bride. The huppah is the bridechamber, the place where Covenantal sexual intercourse occurs to complete the Marriage Covenant.

Commentary · verses 20-24

Jesus' teaching about the wineskins was this: the wineskins represented people, the wine was Doctrine, the old and new wineskins were people of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, respectively. The new Doctrine would burst the people of the Old Covenant if they did not become people of the New Covenant. The Pharisees questioned the disciples when they gathered corn on the Sabbath.

Commentary

In Jewish tradition, the wedding was a feast. The guests feasted while the bride and groom went into the huppah: the bride-chamber where the couple consummated the marriage. The best man stood guard at the door of the bride-chamber making sure no one distracted the couple. When the marriage was consummated the groom called to the best man. The couple presented the blood-stained sheet proving the bride was not married to another and the community celebrated the excellency of the bride that allowed their community to continue. The above passages showed the Church is the Bride (each of us is a part of the Bride or "son of the bride-chamber") and Jesus is the Groom. It looked as if Jesus was "dating" us when He was on earth.

28Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.

29He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is made full.

30He must increase, but I must decrease.

31He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

30He must increase, but I must decrease.

31He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

Commentary

Jesus said John the Baptist was the best man! John knew that Jesus was the Son of God and was Right and Just. He knew this because John said Jesus must increase, and he must decrease, anything less would be a contradiction. The more we allow God to direct our actions the more we decrease... this was humility and growth. John knew God's Identity.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 25-26

John the Baptist's disciples told him more men were going to Jesus to be baptized.

Commentary · verses 27-29

Doctrine: John the Baptist is Jesus' best-man. John the Baptist referenced the Doctrine of Marriage and weddings. During the wedding feast, the best-man stands outside the huppah (marital chamber) while the couple is consummating their Marriage Covenant. The best-man is standing watch and insuring no one interrupts them. When the Covenant is completed, the groom calls to the best-man. The bedsheet is shown to those gathered to prove the bride was not married to anyone else and everyone rejoices because the bride is excellent and their community/culture may continue. Jesus is the Groom. The Church is the Bride. John the Baptist is the best-man.

Commentary · verse 30

Doctrine: This ought to be our objective, get our flesh out of God's way (decrease) so that the Spirit can work through us (increase). John the Baptist's mission was to point people to Jesus. He had done this. Also, this was prophetic in that John would be martyred by Herod.

Commentary · verse 31

Doctrine: John the Baptist knew Jesus was the Messiah. He stated Jesus came "from above." This was the same word used in John 3:3 and 3:7 for "born anew." We must be born of Christ, the One from above.

1Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me.

2In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Commentary

Jesus said God's House has many mansions. The new Jerusalem is 1500 miles on a side, which is half the size of the United States. It is also 1500 miles high. In order for the Church to occupy the new Jerusalem, we would have to have some very large houses: mansions. According to Jewish tradition, when the man betrothed his wife through a vow or token, he went away to build their house. He was not allowed to come back for his bride until his father inspected his house and gave him permission. Jesus said He went away to make a house for us like a Jewish bridegroom.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-2

Doctrine: Jesus went to prepare a place for believers. The only other time God's House was mentioned in the New Testament was by John in Revelation 21:3. God's House/Temple is the new Jerusalem. This is a city that will be 1500 miles square at its base and 1500 miles high. It is made up of rooms/mansions that are occupied by believers. In order to occupy all of this volume with believers, the rooms/mansions would have to be huge. Jesus stated He was preparing a place for us in God's House.

Commentary · verse 3

Jesus was referencing Marriage. In Revelation 21:2, the new Jerusalem was also referred to as the Bride of Christ. Jewish tradition relative to Marriage was the Jewish groom proposed to the bride and then went away to build their house. The groom was not allowed to come for his bride until his father inspected the house and gave his permission. No one knew when the father would give this permission, not even the groom. When the father gave permission, the groom came for his bride and a feast was declared. People were invited to feast while the bride and groom completed the Marriage Covenant. The best man stood outside the huppah and waited for the groom's call that the Covenant was completed. John 3:29 recorded that John the Baptist was/is Jesus' best man. The believers make up the Bride. Right now, Jesus has gone away to prepare the new Jerusalem so that one day He will come back (at the pre-Tribulation Rapture of the Church) to receive us unto Himself.

23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24He that loveth me not keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

Commentary

Jesus spoke of us living in the new Jerusalem because of keeping Jesus' words. Our beliefs are proven by our actions: what we keep. The cause of keeping Jesus' Words is loving God. This is the First Command!

Commentary · verses 23-25

Jesus stated this first part of His answer was something He had already stated: Jesus and God the Father would live within people who love Jesus and keep Jesus' Word. People who did not keep Jesus' Word were rejecting God the Father. Jesus had contrasted the two groups. Next, He could disclose the event...

1Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2And five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

3For the foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them: 4but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him.

7Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

9But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut.

11Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.

1Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

10And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Commentary

Jesus is the Son that comes back when the Father says so. That is why only the Father knows when Jesus is coming back for us. The lamps were a Right WHAT. All of the women had them and just like we learned: all have knowledge/WHAT's/facts. But, there were some that did not have the cause for the fire. They didn't have a Right HOW/WHY. You cannot create a flame without fuel. The oil was the cause. If we do not have truth, and pursue comfort, we are not "known" by Jesus. If we do not have truth, all we have is a SAY, just like the virgins who were left behind.

Commentary · verses 1-13

Verses 1-13: the Parable of the Ten Virgins.

Commentary · verse 6

The "bridegroom" showed up at an unexpected time.

Commentary · verse 7

The virgins trimmed their lamps. "Trimmed" meant "to make ready."

Commentary · verse 10

The virgins who were not ready missed the bridegroom. Notice, Jesus did not say the wise virgins should have given their oil to the foolish virgins. When it came to Salvation, Jesus motivated people with rational self-interest: Jesus showed the individual what they would gain in the long term for themselves, and themselves alone, if they made the right decision in the short term.

Commentary · verse 13

Watch (have integrity) for we do not know when Jesus will return.

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints that are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ: 4even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love: 5having foreordained us unto adoption as sons through Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved: 7in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9making known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him 10unto a dispensation of the fulness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things upon the earth; in him, I say, 11in whom also we were made a heritage, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his will; 12to the end that we should be unto the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ: 13in whom ye also, having heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation,—in whom, having also believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14which is an earnest of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, unto the praise of his glory.

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

2Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

6To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

7In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

8Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

9Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

10That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

11In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

12That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

13In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Commentary

Paul's letter to the Ephesians was his explanation of the meaning of life. His letter began with this passage. The word "earnest" in verse 14 was analogous to a token: engagement ring. The Holy Spirit is proof the Church is betrothed to Jesus. Read over these verses again and be conscious of how many definitions we have learned that were in this passage. It's awesome. It's like reading with a highlighter!

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-2

Paul's opening: He wrote to the saints (believers) in Ephesus. He referenced grace, which is the influence from the Holy Spirit. Technically, verse 2 referenced each Member of the Trinity, separately.

Commentary · verse 3

In the New Testament, there were two different "positions" referenced for believers:

  • First, "through Christ" meant "the Holy Spirit through us while we are on earth."
  • Second, "in Christ" referred to the effects we will experience in eternity, when we are in the new Jerusalem and the Holy Spirit is through us to the maximum amount.

We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the spiritual realm in eternity. However, this did not mean we couldn't access these blessings now. We would need to access these spiritual blessings in heavenly places through spiritual means.

Verse 3 set the context for the next three verses which were Paul's first presentation of the Meaning of Life.

Commentary · verses 4-6

God had a plan before the foundation of the world in that we would be holy and without blame before Him in love eternally in paradise. We have all been foreordained to be children of God by the adoption made possible by Christ according to His Will. It is God's Will that all be saved (1 Timothy 2:4). God intended for everyone to live eternally in the new Jerusalem building up the Bride through love. God provided everything everyone would need to end up in the new Jerusalem for eternity and it's the individuals who are the ones who choose not to receive Salvation by grace.

The next section covered God's Will.

Commentary · verses 7-8

Verses 7 and 8 covered the foundational Doctrine of Christianity: Salvation.

Commentary · verse 9

The mystery of God's Will has been revealed. If we are believers, we can and ought to know God's Will.

Commentary · verses 10-12

God's ultimate Will is that all things in the heavens and upon the earth will be summed up in Christ: the new Jerusalem being married to Jesus. This will occur once all the dispensations have been completed. God the Father and Jesus the Son were mentioned, however, this sentence still was not finished...

Commentary · verses 13-14

Again, with the mention of the Holy Spirit, all three Members of the Trinity were mentioned separately. As we saw in 2 Corinthians 1:22, the Holy Spirit was referred to as the "earnest." After we believe, we are "sealed" with the Holy Spirit in our hearts. This is a sign/symbol of what is to come. It is similar to an engagement ring. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit so He could go prepare a place for His bride. The Holy Spirit is the "earnest" (a down payment) of our inheritance. Notice, Paul's description of the Meaning of Life was lacking specific details, however, the allusions to marriage were present.

14For we have not here an abiding city, but we seek after the city which is to come.

14For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

Commentary

The city which is to come is the new Jerusalem. If you are a believer, this is where you are seeking: something you can't see and something that hasn't happened yet. What's that called?

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 13-14

This was poetic: We should not seek the present physical city and attempt to remain comfortable. We ought to seek a spiritual city to come (the new Jerusalem) by choosing to share in Jesus' discomfort.

5And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6And Jehovah said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do: and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they purpose to do.

5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Commentary

Notice, people on earth that were of one language and one mind were able to do anything. This was a spiritual principle true for everyone whether they are believers or not! Likewise, we will be able to do anything while we are in the Bride, the new Jerusalem, the Body, when we work together. God said that when people speak the same language there will be nothing withholden from them: words! All of us will have the Mind of Christ within us, the ultimate mind! Yet we will still be unique...

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 5-6

Notice, people working together with one language are able to do anything. At the end of the Bible (Revelation 19-22), people will inhabit the new Jerusalem together, speak one language, and act together as the Bride in Marriage to Jesus. At Babel, the people used this ability to attempt to reach God in their flesh, in a physical manner, and to prevent emigration.

11And he gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ: 13till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; 15but speaking truth in love, may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 16from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.

11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

16From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Commentary

We've seen this passage in several Doctrines. It was Paul's description of the Bride. We are all going to work together until we all together are the same stature as Jesus. The Bride will be equal to Jesus. In fact, look at this passage from the next chapter of Ephesians...

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 11

The Church is given the following gifts via the Holy Spirit:

  • apostles,
  • prophets,
  • evangelists,
  • pastors, and
  • teachers.

Remember, Paul stated the Church was built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, which were the first two gifts that Paul mentioned. These five gifts, often referred to as the Five Fold Ministry, were the Positional Spiritual Gifts. Different from the Motivational Spiritual Gifts (Romans 12) and the Manifestational Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12). Everyone has specific motivational gifts they are in control of and can even use to destruction. These gifts never change for the individual because they are the Being (Mind/Soul) of the individual. Any of the Manifestational Spiritual Gifts are able to be done by anyone who is open to the Holy Spirit because these gifts are initiated by the Holy Spirit. Some people have one of the positional gifts mentioned in verse 11. While the gift requires the Holy Spirit to work through the gift, the person holding a positional gift can initiate the gift. For example, any believer can manifest a prophetic word if they are open to the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit initiates this through the person (Manifestational Spiritual Gift). However, a person with the Positional Spiritual Gift of prophet would be able to intentionally get a prophetic word from God via the Holy Spirit.

Commentary · verse 12

Verse 12 was the purpose of the Positional Spiritual Gifts. Notice, verse 11 was an example of a "1" - the individual's uniqueness. Verse 12 gave two examples of a "2" - the fellowship (exchange in love) between two individuals according to their uniqueness. The third part of verse 12 was an example of a "3" - the entire community as a whole, the body of Christ which was the Church. Jesus gave these specific gifts to the Church so that individuals would be matured by serving each other so that the entire Church would be built up. How long would the Church need these gifts?

Commentary · verse 13

We need these gifts until the Church is unified, fully matured in knowledge until we are equal to Christ! This was a tough verse until one remembered that if Christ is going to marry the Bride, why would Christ marry someone who was not His equal? This was a general measure from Paul, however, Paul continued to give specific measures.

Commentary · verse 14

We will need these gifts until we are no longer acting like children who are unstable when it comes to Doctrine and interactions with deceivers. Verses 13 and 14 were examples of "1" - the individual.

Commentary · verse 15

Verse 15 began with our job description in eternity: speaking truth in love.

  • First, "speaking" meant words. Words are important.
  • Second, truth is a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY...which creates.
  • Third, love is an exchange that is the ultimate in profitability.

Paul went into detail about the importance of love leading to profitability in 1 Corinthians 13. We will spend eternity speaking truth in love to each other. This is the ultimate example of "2" - the fellowship (exchange in love) between two individuals according to their uniqueness. The goal is for all of us growing up into Jesus who is the Head of the Body (Church). Again, this was an example of "3" - the community as a whole.

Commentary · verse 16

Paul concluded this Meaning of Life sentence with a "3-2-1," then "1-3-2":

3: "all the body"

2: "fitly framed together and knit together"

1: "which every joint supplieth"

Then, 1: "according to the working in due measure of each several part"

3: "maketh increase of the body unto the building up of itself"

2: "in love"

Half of the Meaning of Life is the Bride/Church, which is the new Jerusalem. The Bride will be made up of all of us who will be in the part of the Body we were designed for, so that we speak the truth in love to the other parts we are joined to, with the overall result being the building up of the Body for eternity.

A lot of people think heaven/the new Jerusalem is a HAVE (possession) or a DO (activity):

  • HAVE example: "I can't wait until I have a Cadillac in heaven."
  • DO example: "I can't wait until I can play golf every day in heaven."

Some people see church today as the same thing:

  • HAVE example: "We have a big building."
  • DO example: "I like singing in the choir."

Eternity with Christ is about an ARE, it's about fellowship, sharing, speaking truth in love to each other. Churches today ought to have the same focus. Possessions and activities cannot increase in eternity. Fellowship and love can continually increase in eternity. Love can result in more in eternity because God's mercy will endure. When you give to me and do not expect anything in return, you are owed. If God's mercy ceased in eternity, He would equal this out immediately. However, because God's mercy continues, I would feel compelled to pay you back. If I paid you back according to uniqueness, then something that cost me little would be valued by you as more, especially if God put us together in the Body because our uniquenesses are mutually profitable. My giving you something I valued little and you valued a lot will cause you to give me something you value a lot, and that I value enormously. This exchange could continue into eternity and always result in more.

Chapter

Changes this passage only. Set your default for every passage.

22Wives, be in subjection unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body.

24But as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their husbands in everything.

25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; 26that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, 27that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself: 29for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church; 30because we are members of his body.

31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.

32This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church.

22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Commentary

Paul said the mystery was that we, the Church, are married to Jesus. How do we sanctify our man-made traditional churches? We wash them with Jesus' words! Matthew 7:24... this was a DO, this was wisdom! In this eternal marriage, Jesus IS the Word. He is the Perfect Husband.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 22-23

Doctrine: Christ is the Head of the Church, the husband is the head of the wife, the "head" being the leader. Leadership is "facilitating the purpose and progress of another person."

Commentary · verse 24

Marriage Doctrine: Wives, be to your husbands in everything. Simple instructions from Paul. Could this be because women naturally are about sharing? Women are destructive when they supply their own causes and then make effects from them. Verse 24 pointed women to get causes from their husband.

Commentary · verses 25-31

Verses 25-31: the exhaustive instructions for a husband to his wife.

Commentary · verse 25

Marriage Doctrine: The husband gives himself up for the wife. Masculinity is putting the interest of others (including your wife and kids) above your own interest. This is really tough to do, which is why it takes a tough person to do it. Many husbands focus their wives on submitting, but ignore the fact that everything the husband does ought to be in the best interest of the wife. After all, everything Christ did was for the benefit of the Church. Jesus did not personally benefit from anything He did.

Commentary · verse 26

Marriage Doctrine: Husbands are to sanctify and cleanse their wives with the Word of God. In Israel, every boy was meant to memorize the Torah. In 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, Paul would not suffer a woman to speak in church that could go home and ask her husband. God's design for Marriage involved the husband knowing the Word of God well enough he could teach it to his wife. Paul was trying to help spouses have a better Marriage. In eternity, the Groom will sanctify and cleanse the Bride by the Word of God, and since the Groom (Jesus) is the Word, this Marriage will be paradisiacal.

Commentary · verse 27

Jesus (Groom) will present the Church (Bride) to Himself. Notice, the benefit the husband ought to get from being about the wife's best interest is that he can present his wife to himself, and the wife ought to be towards the husband in everything.

Commentary · verse 29

Marriage Doctrine: Husbands are to nourish and cherish their wives:

  • "Nourisheth" meant "growing and maturing." This was a husband teaching and confronting his wife, for her benefit.
  • "Cherisheth" meant "gently." This was a husband providing a safe place for the wife, so that he could "nourish" her in a way that would be for her benefit.

Commentary · verse 30

Throughout this explanation of the second half of the Meaning of Life, Paul switched between earthly Marriage (between husband and wife) and Eternal Marriage (between Jesus and the Church). For example, the previous sentence began with earthly Marriage and concluded with Eternal Marriage, blatantly stating that believers were members of Jesus' Body. Paul was more clear that this meant Jesus' Bride...

Commentary · verse 31

Paul referenced Genesis 2:24. Here is what we wrote for that verse:

"Cleave in this verse was the same cleave as used in Deuteronomy 10:20: '"Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God; him shalt thou serve; and to him shalt thou cleave, and by his name shalt thou swear."' God is superior to us and we cleave to Him. Likewise, women are a superior help to males; women are perfect for males, unless you believe we are equal or greater than God."

Commentary · verse 32

Paul stated this mystery was great and then stated it: Christ and the Church will become one flesh in Marriage. This was the mystery Paul said was now known because of the New Testament Church!

1Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Commentary

Jesus came down from heaven and endured the cross for the joy that was set before Him. Jesus was in heaven. What could be greater than heaven? What didn't Jesus have in heaven? Jesus endured the cross so that we could have the ability to be saved. So that we could have the Holy Spirit. So that we could choose to be saved and take our place in the Bride. Jesus' joy was marriage to the Bride where every cell in Her Body willfully desired Jesus. Believing in Calvinism made Jesus perverted: Jesus would be with a Woman who had no choice in the matter. In fact, that arrangement would be very similar to pornography...

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

This verse was used to state that those who had died before us watch what we do ("so great a cloud of witnesses"). One reason this may be so was that people who have died would not know less, they should not be prevented from learning from us, since we have the ability to learn from them.

Commentary · verse 2

This can be seen as a continuation of Paul's examples of faith, Jesus being the greatest example. Notice, it required faith for Him to endure the cross. Why? The "joy that was set before Him" was something that had yet to happen.

Yet to happen = Joy set before Him.

Run with patience the race (our life) that is set before us while looking unto Jesus who is the author (the chief leader, prince) and finisher (perfecter) of our faith. Jesus, in heaven, saw the joy set before Him and endured the cross. What joy could Jesus not have possessed in heaven that He would have to endure the cross in order to receive? His Bride!

Closing Thoughts

So why is it taking so long for us to be in heaven as a part of this Bride? Is there a reason why? If God wants us to be in heaven, why are we not there yet? We know that God is Right and Just, but it seems like the abuse Believers have endured throughout history is quite sufficient.

We are living in the "current way," anxiously anticipating the "next way" for God to move. What about when people were living under the Law, were they anticipating what would happen in our generation? What about the people before the Law? What about the people before
