Doctrine #23: God's Identity

Doctrine #23 Read

I am motivated by compassion and serving others. It is my "nature." I didn't choose it. It's who I am. The way to get my attention is by sharing the way you feel, especially your pain, and the needs you have. So, if you wanted me to help you move you could say, "Hey, Jonathan. The thought of moving is a huge drain for me and hurts my back. I really need some help!" That would cause me to jump into action for you.

Do you think what I just shared with you would cause you to interact with me better or worse in the future?

Overview

God is always, completely Right and always, completely Just. This is God's Nature. God cannot do anything apart from His Nature. God cannot have an effect for which He doesn't have a cause. God has choice within His Nature. The principles of right and just are causeless causes.

Discussion Question

Do you believe God's nature being Right and Just is limiting to your view of who He is?

1Give ear, ye heavens, and I will speak; And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

2My doctrine shall drop as the rain; My speech shall distil as the dew, As the small rain upon the tender grass, And as the showers upon the herb.

3For I will proclaim the name of Jehovah: Ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

4The Rock, his work is perfect; For all his ways are justice: A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, Just and right is he.

1Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

2My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

3Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

4He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Commentary

Moses spoke face to face with God as a friend. Moses' last statement began with him making his most important point, and he wanted the entire earth to hear his words: God is Just and Right. Isn't it amazing that God is a God of FAITHfulness! Moses called God "The Rock" because His work is perfect. What is the definition of wisdom? We saw the following passages in Doctrine #18: Omnipotent...

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-43

Verses 1-43: Moses' Song. This song will be sung to God in heaven in the end times, re: Revelation 15:3.

Commentary · verses 1-4

Verses 1-4: the introduction.

Commentary · verse 4

Moses spoke to God as a friend. Moses knew God. Moses stated for everyone to hear what he had to say about God, then he stated God's Nature: Right and Just. God's work was perfect (maximum profitability). All of God's ways were Just. God was without iniquity. God was always completely Right and always completely Just.

1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal; 3but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour; 4to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.

1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

2In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

3But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

4To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

A Doctrine-filled introduction...

Commentary · verse 2

Doctrine: God cannot lie. This did not say that God could lie but chooses not to or God does not lie. God is not able to lie, because God's Nature is always completely Right and always completely Just. For God to be able to lie, He would have to have the causes of being able to lie within Himself, which would be "darkness." God is light, in Him there is "no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). God's Nature possesses none of the causes that would be able to result in being able to lie. Hebrews 6:18 stated the same Doctrine.

Doctrine: God promised eternal life before the creation of the world.

Commentary · verse 3

God made these promises apparent in His Word, the same Word that was intrusted to Paul.

Commentary · verse 4

Paul was writing to Titus.

17Wherein God, being minded to show more abundantly unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath; 18that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us: 19which we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and stedfast and entering into that which is within the veil; 20whither as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

17Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

18That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

20Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Commentary

God cannot lie because He doesn't have the causes within His Nature. We learned with omnipotent that God cannot lie and tied it together with holy in the previous Doctrine. If God lied He would be unclean. Would it be right to lie? Would it be just to lie?

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 16-18

Doctrine: It is impossible for God to lie. Paul made a similar statement in Titus 1:2.

Commentary · verses 19-20

Paul used two analogies to show the Hebrew Christians they could have faith that Jesus was able to provide Salvation.

Commentary · verse 20

Theme of Chapter 6: Paul began to build on foundational Doctrines by stating that we need to have the actual value of what we present to others. Everyone who SAYS they believe foundational Doctrines appears to be a believer immediately after this confession. However, over time, believers are apparent to all once they demonstrate their actual value.

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Commentary

God is the First Cause: He spoke and everything was created. God's causes would have to be causeless causes because they had to always exist. Right and just are causeless, there is nothing before them. These principles would exist even if nothing was right and just. It is like our math analogy: two plus two equals four regardless if you are correct or not, or even doing math.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

The phrase "In the beginning" did not mean "the first moment of time." It actually meant "shaking" as in the moment that something happened. The "heavens" was where God lives. In this verse "earth" meant "all the physical matter that would ever exist." Basically, this first verse of the Bible could be read as: "When the First Cause made something happen, He created the intangible place where He lived and all the physical matter that would ever exist."

After an in-depth study of both the definitions and etymology of the words used in the first two chapters of Genesis, a much deeper meaning behind these verses is revealed. This first verse of the Bible actually alluded to God's eternal plan in the etymology. Here was this first verse according to etymology: "At the time of the First Cause, the intangible place where God places his banner and the marriage bed were created by consent and the agreement of the Trinity on an original thought." Creation only occurs with agreement...by two or more people exchanging value. The devil cannot create because he cannot come into agreement with anyone, he only destroys. If it was only God the Father, none of this would have been created. The Trinity's purpose was to create a Bride for Jesus. This would allow each of the Trinity to interact with each other through the Bride in a manner that would be profitable for eternity.

Commentary · verse 2

Here is the translation of this verse according to the definitions and etymology of the words that were used:

  • The phrase "And the earth was waste and void" meant "All the physical matter that would make up all of life was from its beginning without purpose and without anything good or bad in it."
  • The phrase "...and darkness was upon the face of the deep" meant "a complete lack of understanding covered the shell of this chaotic egg that consisted of water."
  • The phrase "...and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" meant "the breath of the most powerful Right and Just sat brooded like a bird upon the inside of this egg."

Basically, God created a mass of water that resembled an egg, while the Holy Spirit brooded like a bird over this egg. The physical matter was not good or bad, it was just physical matter. The Holy Spirit was the seed that "fertilized this egg." Notice, the New Testament began with the Holy Spirit fertilizing the egg inside Mary. Her egg was not good or bad, it was just physical matter. People who think the egg was good end up worshipping the earth...and worshipping Mary.

Commentary · verse 3

God spoke things into existence. God is intangible, otherwise, a person could ask, "Where did the matter that made up God first come from?" God also created the tangible through the intangible: words. Words are vibrations, which themselves are not tangible. Every other "creation story" began with tangible matter, which was not possible. "Light" came from Hebrew word or which meant "energy." Everywhere the word "light" was used in the Bible, you can substitute the word "energy." Recently, science has determined that all the elements can be created with water, high energy, and heat. So far, we've seen the earth was all water. The Holy Spirit's brooding supplied heat. God creating light/energy allowed elements and physical uniqueness to be possible.

Chapter

20For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse: 21because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.

20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Commentary

We saw this passage from Doctrine #16: God's Existence. We learned that order cannot be random and we can see God's power in the physical as an effect because He is spiritual. The following passage was a portion of another passage from the Doctrine of God's Existence...

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 20-21

Verses 20-21: presented the crucial Doctrine that the rest of this letter is built on.

Commentary · verse 20

Doctrine: God is invisible and the proof of God's existence is clearly seen through the physical things that God made. This was done so that everyone has the information to make the right choice. The God-given principle of causality proves the existence of a First Cause. God created our brains in a way that we innately embraces this truth, whether we're aware of it or not. Trying to ignore causality would be the same as trying to damage your brain and damage your faith. Verse 20 stated that everyone is without excuse if they don't have faith in the existence of God. However, this was only the first half of the reason why God's wrath is against non-believers...

Commentary · verse 21

The word "glory" meant "intrinsic value" and resulted in a person "thinking well of" the subject they "glorified." The ultimate cause of people being non-believers is that these people choose not to think well of God, in fact, they don't even give God thanks! The cause for people not glorifying God: vain (unprofitable) in their reasonings (imaginations) and their senseless (foolish; without understanding) heart was darkened (effect of a bad thought process). God did His part, and the reason people do not believe is because they choose not to recognize the value within God. This happens even though they know a First Cause must exist, and working against causality results in their thought processes becoming worse.

The rest of Paul's letter was based on this critical cause: God does not think well of people (glorify) who choose not to think well of (glorify) God, and the result is God's wrath is against these people. What does God think of people who think well of Him?

16for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; 17and he is before all things, and in him all things consist.

16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Commentary

The visible things were made from a First Cause that was invisible. The physical is a WHAT: an effect, and knowledge. The spiritual is a WHY and HOW: causes, understanding and wisdom! A belief in something you can't see is called...?

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 15-17

Doctrine: By Christ, all things were created. God the Father has always existed. Jesus was begotten of God (John 3:16). Even though this means Jesus came after God the Father (since God the Father has infinitely existed), Jesus has essentially infinitely existed. For example, there is no difference between infinity and infinity plus one. When God the Father created everything, it was after Jesus was begotten because it was through Jesus everything was created. Creation has to be done by agreement, which means there had to be more than one Being prior to creation.

3Doth God pervert justice? Or doth the Almighty pervert righteousness?

3Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice?

Commentary

God cannot pervert just and right. It is not in His Nature. Justice is an effect of just. Righteousness is an effect of right. A man violates that which is just and right, not God. If you justify yourself you are literally perverting justice. That's what it means to think like a man. Do you think that God can do everything? This verse showed two more things God cannot do! Maybe people want God to be a man like us? We will look at justice in the next Doctrine.

6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Commentary

Jesus will rule with Just and Right and the effects are Justice and Righteousness. Jesus was the Holy One of God, His Son. His Identity would have to be the same as God's because He is fully God and fully man.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 4-6

Another Messianic prophecy. The government will be upon His Shoulders: This is because Jesus is a leader, not a boss. Jesus is always about serving, about facilitating the purpose and progress of others. A boss would be on top of the government. Jesus will be called: Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Commentary · verse 7

The increase (growth and profitability) of His government and peace will have no end. This was speaking about eternity.

5And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.

Commentary

Again, Jesus will seek Just and do Right. In some versions of the Bible, the word "right" was translated as judgment. The meaning of judgment was "a right decision," like having good judgment. Justice and righteousness are effects of causes: Just and Right. Right and just is the HOW/WHY, the cause.

4For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

5He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.

6By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

Commentary

God loves right and just. In order for God to love something, there would have to be something that came before love. Causes that God could direct His love towards.

If God's identity is Right and Just, then what do you think it would look like for you, who share the mind of Christ, to think as God Thinks?

A lot of "christians" believe it is our "christian duty" to judge other people. Some "christians" call themselves "fruit checkers". This is man's wrong view of what it means to execute justice. How does God see it?

If you look below, you are going to see a massive amount of scripture speaking about right and righteousness, just and justice.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-4

God's Word was Right and His works were done in faithfulness. Faith was a belief in something you couldn't see, either because it was invisible or it had not happened yet (Hebrews 11:1). If God had faith, what were the implications concerned with what faith meant?

Commentary · verse 5

God loves Righteousness and Justice because He is Right and Just.

Commentary · verse 6

God created with His Word and with His Breath: Spirit.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-4

These verses contained the purpose of the Book of Proverbs. In fact, it will be very beneficial to have definitions for the following words:

Knowledge - The ability to retain facts.

Understanding - The ability to take knowledge from more than one area and create new knowledge.

Wisdom - Profitable, long term decisions.

Said another way:

  • Knowledge was a right what,
  • Understanding was a right why, and
  • Wisdom was a right HOW.

The purpose of this book was to help people make the right decision by giving the reader the right information and the right causal relationship: knowledge and understanding.

9Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And minister justice to the poor and needy.

9Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 4-9

The job of a king was to remember the Law, enforce judgment, and plead the cause of the poor and the needy. Focusing on women and strong drink would distract a king from doing his job. This mini-section stated the purpose of strong drink was to allow those who were in pain to have temporary relief from the knowledge that they were in misery.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 14-16

Did Solomon recognize the long term implications of Righteousness and Justice? Was Solomon making the same mistake Job made? If Solomon understood that Justice would be equaled out in the long term, would he have "strengthened the arm of the needy and poor" so that he would be profitable?

8If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter: for one higher than the high regardeth; and there are higher than they.

8If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 8-9

Solomon did not stay on the topic of God very long. Verses 8-9 began about the oppression of the poor but transitioned to the role of the king being "to be served" and not "to serve." Solomon was not facilitating the purpose and progress of others. He was not being a leader. In fact, Solomon was aware that the poor were oppressed and his rationalization was that God saw it so the king did not need to deal with it. The king was served by the field. Solomon rationalized why he did not need to strengthen the arm of the poor and needy. He had completely justified himself in doing the four causes of judgment. There was no way for Solomon to recover from this. Everything we will read from this point on was an effect of a person who was completely justified in his own eyes...

The purpose of this book was to illustrate to Israel through the Doctrine of Marriage how Israel needed to choose to repent from their backsliding or suffer the consequences. During the time of this book, Israel was taken into captivity, while Judah was still sovereign.
