Truth

Doctrine #29: Deception

Doctrine #29 Read

Deception is not easily spotted, unless you know the definition of the word.

Deception is a physically attractive woman who lies to your face.

Deception is a body builder who never takes emotional risks.

Deception is a marriage where the goal is to stay together, regardless of the cost.

Overview

Deception is a Right WHAT with a Wrong HOW/WHY. This includes a Right WHAT with no HOW/WHY. Deception is a fact that destroys. Deception is a fact that is evil.

Discussion Question

Do you believe you can distinguish between truth and deception?

Scripture

1 John 1:5-8

Chapter

Changes this passage only. Set your default for every passage.

5And this is the message which we have heard from him and announce unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

5This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Commentary

Saying that we have fellowship with God is a Right WHAT, but if we walk in darkness it is a Wrong HOW/WHY. Without the causes (how/why) it is deception, not truth. If we have no sin, then we have no need for Jesus.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 5

Doctrine: God does not have any evil causes within His Nature.

This was the main point: God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. God is Holy: always completely Right and always completely Just. It is impossible for God to do anything wrong and unjust because He does not possess the necessary evil causes within His Nature to be wrong and unjust and God has no other nature besides Right and Just to act in.

Commentary · verses 6-10

Verses 6-10: each "if"/then statements.

Commentary · verse 6

If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness (contradiction), we lie and do not the truth:

  • "If we say that we have fellowship with him" was a declaration. Our actions will prove whether what we say is a lie or factual.
  • Walking in darkness did not mean making a mistake. It meant intentionally making progress away from God.
  • If we have said we are in fellowship with God but are intentionally moving away from God, we are liars and "do not the truth".
  • Truth was the measurement of whether or not we were in fellowship with God. The measurement for truth was not lack of contradiction because we may not have all the facts. The measurement for lying (lack of truth) was contradiction.

Commentary · verse 7

Walking in the light was intentionally making progress towards God. If we have fellowship with God, as Jesus did, we would have fellowship with each other. The effect of having fellowship with God was that Jesus' Blood would cleanse us from all sin.

This verse was presented the way things ought to be. We need to keep "the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" in context with the rest of this verse and not add to the context an outside source.

Commentary · verse 8

Saying we have no sin was deception. This was the right WHAT but with the wrong HOW/WHY. The wrong HOW/WHY behind having no sin was doing it in our own strength. This was the Law: "I won't do this, that, etc." The right HOW/WHY behind having no sin was being in fellowship with God (by grace through faith). These were principles, things we ought to focus on, not things we do not do. A person truly in fellowship with God would not say "I have no sin." Truth was the measurement. Notice, Salvation is not based on never sinning. We have all sinned, yet people do receive Salvation. Salvation must depend on something more...

Chapter

5For this ye know of a surety, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

6Let no man deceive you with empty words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.

7Be not ye therefore partakers with them; 8for ye were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord: walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10proving what is well-pleasing unto the Lord; 11and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them; 12for the things which are done by them in secret it is a shame even to speak of.

5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

7Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

Commentary

Deception occurs with empty. An empty word is a word that sounds Right but has the Wrong HOW/WHY. Whenever satan speaks, this is how he does it. Satan said to Eve that she wouldn't die when she ate of the tree, but God was talking about death as being separated from our purpose in Him, not physical death. Satan deceived Eve by using a different definition for "death" than God! If your words are right and your actions are unfruitful (wrong) that is when deception occurs. The effects of light are goodness, righteousness, and truth. Walking (DO) in the light is the cause.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 5-6

Deception is a right WHAT with a wrong or no HOW/WHY. "Empty words" have a wrong or no HOW/WHY, they are words that either have a wrong definition or have not been defined. Paul blatantly stated these actions that prevented people from attaining Salvation brought the wrath of God.

Commentary · verses 7-12

Our actions ("walk") prove whether or not we are believers, whether we are "children of the light." Verse 11 was the example Jesus set for us: having no fellowship with unprofitable works, but exposing them with light.

Chapter

15Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.

16But shun profane babblings: for they will proceed further in ungodliness, 17and their word will eat as doth a gangrene: of whom is Hymenæus and Philetus; 18men who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.

15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus;

18Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

Commentary

We learned in Doctrine #14: HOW/WHY vs. WHAT that a "workman" is someone who toils with words, in order to cut logos (understanding) with rhema (wisdom, the sword). These people handle aright the word of truth. Profane babblings are right words with wrong definitions, which is deception, and the opposite of truth. Profane babblings are words that are used to "walk on" people, to tear them down.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 15

Let's look at the key words in this sentence:

  • "present" (Strong's #3936) paristēmi - "to bring into one's fellowship or intimacy, exhibit whom you covenant with"
  • "workman" (Strong's #2040) ergatēs - "to toil with works of words as a teacher"
  • "needeth not to be ashamed" (Strong's #422) anepaischyntos - "unable to be of equal value by scriptural support"
  • "handling aright" (Strong's #3718) orthotomeō - "make a straight cut, a precise singular surgical cut that is perpendicular to the horizon, to make a cut from above, which is God's view: straight down."

We ought to show whether we are in covenant with God or not by our ability to toil with works of words by our ability to have God's view on God's Word.

Commentary · verse 16

Key words:

  • "profane" (Strong's #952) bebēlos - "counterfeit the threshold (entry) in order to misdirect the dwellers"
  • "babblings" (Strong's #2757) kenophōnia - "fruitless discussions, empty sounds [from artificial illumination and tones], fake fire [visual fire with no warmth], to think words that have a different meaning but same sound as true thought and words."

We ought to shun words that have the same sound but different meanings than the truth because it will lead to misdirecting us and to growing in ungodliness.

Commentary · verse 17

Paul named two men who had put stumblingblocks in the paths of believers to the point that they had overthrown the faith of some.

Commentary · verse 18

Key words:

  • "erred" (Strong's #795) astocheō - "swerve, deviate [miss target by having crooked sights - eye is misdirected]"
  • "overthrow" (Strong's #396) anatrepō - "change straight path into a figure eight, the wrong path leads to a wrong place."

False words can cause people to be misdirected into taking a wrong path leading to a wrong place.

Chapter

13till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; 15but speaking truth in love, may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ;

13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Commentary

This was the Meaning OF Life verse. We will spend eternity speaking (words!) the truth in love, and the result (effect) is that we will grow unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. That is something that will not happen immediately! Doctrine is a WHAT. The deceptive doctrine is by the sleight of men and the HOW is craftiness and introducing doctrine that is in error.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 13

We need these gifts until the Church is unified, fully matured in knowledge until we are equal to Christ! This was a tough verse until one remembered that if Christ is going to marry the Bride, why would Christ marry someone who was not His equal? This was a general measure from Paul, however, Paul continued to give specific measures.

Commentary · verse 14

We will need these gifts until we are no longer acting like children who are unstable when it comes to Doctrine and interactions with deceivers. Verses 13 and 14 were examples of "1" - the individual.

Commentary · verse 15

Verse 15 began with our job description in eternity: speaking truth in love.

  • First, "speaking" meant words. Words are important.
  • Second, truth is a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY...which creates.
  • Third, love is an exchange that is the ultimate in profitability.

Paul went into detail about the importance of love leading to profitability in 1 Corinthians 13. We will spend eternity speaking truth in love to each other. This is the ultimate example of "2" - the fellowship (exchange in love) between two individuals according to their uniqueness. The goal is for all of us growing up into Jesus who is the Head of the Body (Church). Again, this was an example of "3" - the community as a whole.

28Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

Commentary

If you were to be a witness against someone without a cause, that is the definition of deception. If something is without a cause it has NO HOW/WHY! Being a "witness" is a Right WHAT. We can be a witness for Jesus, we can be a witness in court. WHY/HOW we witness is what makes our witness true!

Commentary · verses 20-23

14A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth; And the doings of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.

15The way of a fool is right in his own eyes; But he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.

16A fool’s vexation is presently known; But a prudent man concealeth shame.

17He that uttereth truth showeth forth righteousness; But a false witness, deceit.

14A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.

15The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

16A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

17He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.

Commentary

Good is a Right WHAT with a right HOW, which is righteousness from truth. Deceit is saying the right thing but doing something else that has to be concealed.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 14-15

A fool was right in his own eyes (pride) but he that listened to counsel (humble) was wise.

Chapter

1Therefore seeing we have this ministry, even as we obtained mercy, we faint not: 2but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in them that perish: 4in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them.

1Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

2But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

3But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Commentary

Again, deceit is handling the word of God with hidden things (veiled) and craftiness. We have heard about these people in the mystery and gnostic sections. The truth is manifest, the HOW/WHY is apparent to all, so that no one has an excuse not to know the truth. If the gospel is hidden from you, you are an unbeliever. We are to believe and understand because we have the mind of Christ within us.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

Paul's ministry was preaching the Gospel to the lost, specifically to the Gentiles.

Commentary · verse 2

This verse continued to provide the context to the concluding verse of the previous chapter. Believers' unveiling is towards each other so that the manifestation of the truth occurs through each believer by the Holy Spirit and this is commended to every man's conscience, to every one we are unveiled towards! Fellowship with other believers ought to lead to the glory of God manifesting itself.

Commentary · verse 3

If the Gospel was veiled (hidden), it was hidden to those who would perish (unbelievers). Paul continued the theme from the previous chapter: contrasting the previous dispensation with the current dispensation.

Commentary · verse 4

The god of this world (Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that the light of the Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, would shine on them (unbelievers). The work Satan has done has caused people not to think.

17Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them that are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye learned: and turn away from them.

18For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent.

19For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I rejoice therefore over you: but I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple unto that which is evil.

17Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

18For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

19For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

Commentary

Smooth and fair speech is attractive. It has the ability to draw people in, because words can be soothing and wooing just like music can be. If words are used to beguile, then it is deceit. In other words, it would be Right Words, with the Wrong actions/ Wrong HOW (this is the definition of hypocrisy). Our obedience to Christ is a Right HOW and it is apparent to all men and results in good: something is created.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-27

Commentary · verses 14-17

15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you; 16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

17Ye therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness.

15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Commentary

Peter stated Paul's writings were hard to understand. The writings of Paul caused people to turn from the truth because people chose to be ignorant and not steadfast. These people treated the other scriptures the same way, they would turn away because they chose to not understand. However, not understanding the WHY will lead to destruction. If your beliefs are based on a series of WHAT's you have never actually built a foundation with a HOW/WHY.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 15-16

Peter was aware that Paul wrote epistles to the people whom Peter was writing: Jews. This may have been what we know as the Book of Hebrews. Peter was aware of other epistles and even said that some of Paul's writings were hard to understand. This was not a reason to not try to understand because the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth.

Commentary · verses 17-18

If grace meant "unmerited favor," how would I "grow in grace"? I would need to increase the amount of areas in my life where I could be considered "unmerited"! This means I would have to get worse and progressively live unjustly, in order for me to grow in grace!

"Grace" is "the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life." Growing in grace does mean that I increase in my ability to hear God's Voice and allow that Voice to come through in my words/actions.

Chapter

10But these rail at whatsoever things they know not: and what they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason, in these things are they destroyed.

11Woe unto them! for they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.

12These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

10But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.

11Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

12These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

13Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Commentary

This passage is a perfect example of animal thinking. Animal thinking is without understanding and leads to destruction. We talked about man's WHY being the way that he naturally thinks, which is short term and driven by self justification. Cain, Balaam, and Korah had a Right WHAT with a Wrong HOW/WHY. Jude said the people who are deceptive are hidden among you. The deception will come from the very people who look like they are believers. They have a Right WHAT (they feast with you, they are shepherds, clouds, and autumn leaves) but they have a Wrong HOW/WHY (they hide rocks at feasts, they feed themselves, do not have water, without fruit, twice dead). Clearly not everyone makes it to heaven because blackness and darkness hath been reserved for these people forever.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 10

This was the same as what was stated in 2 Peter 2:12-13. These people did not have faith because all they could believe was what they understood naturally, what could be seen. Animals do not have faith. Also, animals do not have understanding/reason. Likewise, Jude stated the intentional deceivers were people who lacked understanding/reason, they lacked a right WHY. Deception is a right WHAT with a wrong or no HOW/WHY. Jude gave three specific examples that illustrated HOW/WHY these intentional deceivers were destructive:

Commentary · verse 11

Peter also mentioned Balaam in 2 Peter 2:15. Let's look at each example separately:

  • Cain (Genesis 4) - Cain gave an offering (right WHAT) but got upset when he saw Abel's offering get respect from God (wrong WHY). Cain wanted to feel good about himself at Abel's expense, so Cain murdered Abel (wrong HOW). Cain did not have faith. He could only believe in what he could see.
  • Balaam (Numbers 22-24) - God told Balaam (the right) WHAT to say. Balaam was told by God to deal with Balak in one way (right HOW), yet Balaam wanted a reward from Balak (wrong WHY), so Balaam did it his way (wrong HOW). Balaam did not have faith. He could only believe in what he could see.
  • Korah (Numbers 16) - Korah rallied a group of 250 leaders against Moses (and Aaron) in order to take over. Korah got these 250 leaders to stand up against Moses and Aaron (wrong HOW) so that 250 vs. 2 would cause Moses and Aaron to appear to be wrong (wrong WHY). However, God had all 250 killed. Korah did not have faith. Korah could only believe in what he could see, and tried to get the people to be like him.

Cain wanted God's blessing. Balaam wanted money. Korah wanted power. The issue was WHY and HOW each of these three went about getting these three WHAT's.

Commentary · verse 12

Notice, the examples all had a right WHAT (appearance), yet they did not have the right HOW/WHY which would lead to profitability:

  • Shepherds, that feed themselves.
  • Clouds, without water.
  • Leaves at harvest time, with no fruit.

Jude's measure (and God's) was profitability.

Commentary · verse 13

These people would experience eternal punishment.

1Now we beseech you, brethren, touching the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto him; 2to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand; 3let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, 4he that opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sitteth in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God.

5Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

6And now ye know that which restraineth, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season.

7For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way.

8And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his coming; 9even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

1Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

3Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

5Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

6And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Commentary

Paul warned not to be beguiled by words. Words are powerful, do you believe this yet?! He gives HOW we would be beguiled and WHY we would be beguiled. Then the antichrist's coming is with power, signs and lying wonders, all things that people would desire to worship in someone else. These things are Right WHAT's, but Wrong HOW/WHY.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-2

Paul dealt directly with the false teachers who claimed Paul said the Day of the Lord had already happened.

Commentary · verse 3

Verse 3 covered two events that will precede Christ's spiritual coming to Rapture His Church:

  1. There will be a falling away.

  2. Then, the man of sin (Antichrist) will be revealed.

Commentary · verse 4

Doctrine: The Antichrist will oppose and exalt himself against God. He will sit in the temple and claim to be God. We covered this in 1 Thessalonians: Jesus' spiritual coming for His Church will end our current dispensation with the pre-Tribulation Rapture of the Church, which was known as the "Day of the Lord."

The Tribulation is a seven year period that concludes the previous dispensation (the Law) that is re-established and was also known as the "Seventieth Week of Daniel" (Daniel 9:24-27). The first three and a half years of the Tribulation will be a time of peace and safety with the Jews worshipping God in His temple. Halfway through the Tribulation, the Antichrist will declare himself as God and set up an idol (known as "the abomination of desolation") in the temple and cause people to worship it or be killed. Jesus stated (Matthew 24) that Jews who see this event ought to immediately flee in hiding so they would make it through to the end of the Tribulation.

At the end of the Tribulation, Jesus Raptures those who became believers during the Tribulation and returns with all the believers at the battle of Armageddon. This physical return to the earth when Jesus will put His Foot on the Mount of Olives was also known as the "Day of the Lord." Verse 4 showed Paul was speaking of the Antichrist at the midpoint of the Tribulation.

Commentary · verse 5

This was the only question in this letter, and it was rhetorical. Paul spoke about these events when he was present with them. Notice, Paul did cover "end times" Doctrine with new believers.

Commentary · verse 6

Paul referenced that someone was currently restraining the Antichrist so that the Antichrist would be revealed at the right time. Paul stated this to prove that the Day of the Lord had not occurred yet. Notice, the spiritual Day of the Lord will occur just before the Antichrist is revealed and the physical Day of the Lord will occur to defeat the Antichrist.

Commentary · verse 7

Paul stated that the One currently restraining the Antichrist will eventually be taken out of the way. Notice, the One restraining was referred to as a HE.

Commentary · verse 8

Doctrine: The Antichrist will be revealed after HE that restraineth is taken out of the way. The Lord Jesus will slay the Antichrist, at the end of the Tribulation, with the "breath of his mouth"…with His words.

Remember, the Church is the Bride, a she. The One that restraineth, the only One on earth during our dispensation able to restrain the Antichrist, is the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit is removed from this earth, then the Antichrist will be revealed. Our dispensation is characterized by the Holy Spirit being upon all flesh and within all believers. When the believers are Raptured prior to the beginning of the Tribulation, the Holy Spirit will leave this earth with the believers. Not only does that conclude our dispensation of personal grace via the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it re-establishes the previous dispensation (the Law) during which the Holy Spirit only dwelt within the prophets. Without the Holy Spirit upon all flesh and within believers during the Tribulation, the only way people can be approached will be logically, like they were during the Old Testament through the Law. The Book of Revelation was written for people who would be on earth during the Tribulation, and the explanation was logical and objective, right down to the number of days between key events. Also, the fact that believers will be missing from the earth and the revelation/influence from the Holy Spirit will also be missing will create an environment where unrighteousness will rule.

Commentary · verses 9-10

Doctrine: People chose not to love the truth, which caused them to not attain Salvation. Everything necessary for Salvation has been provided by God, however, it is the responsibility of the individual to choose to receive it. Paul stated the Antichrist's coming will involve all power and signs and lying wonders and with all deceit of unrighteousness. Notice, these signs will not happen until the Church along with the Holy Spirit has been removed.

1But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come.

2For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, 4traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; 5holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.

6For of these are they that creep into houses, and take captive silly women laden with sins, led away by divers lusts, 7ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Commentary

A "form of godliness" is a Right WHAT. We can all have God flowing through us in a Right and Just way, which is Holy and godly. But, these people will deceive because they deny the power of God which is a Wrong HOW/WHY. Again, this deception comes from those who look like believers. These deceiver will be ever learning which is knowledge/facts/WHAT's, but never able to get to the knowledge of the HOW/WHY (the causes)... the knowledge of the truth!

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

In the last days, grievous times will come. "Grievous" meant "hard to do, to take, to approach, hard to bear, troublesome, dangerous, harsh, fierce, savage."

Commentary · verses 2-7

Verses 2-7: signs of the end times.

Commentary · verse 5

The form of godliness but denying the power of God: wolves in sheep's clothing. All of these unprofitable attributes were deceptive: they could appear to be a right WHAT, but the HOW/WHY was wrong.

Commentary · verse 7

Ever learning (gaining knowledge; a right WHAT) but never able to come to truth (a right WHAT with a right HOW/WHY). Again, this was an example of deception.

1And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and trying him asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

2But he answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the heaven is red.

3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the heaven is red and lowering. Ye know how to discern the face of the heaven; but ye cannot discern the signs of the times.

4An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of Jonah. And he left them, and departed.

1The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

2He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

Commentary

Discernment is knowing the HOW/WHY. Jesus' example showed the Pharisees and Sadducees they knew the HOW/WHY of the physical world, yet didn't know the HOW/WHY of the spiritual world. Asking for a sign (Right WHAT) as a cause in order to have faith, however, faith is belief without seeing. So, the request sounded right, however, the HOW/WHY were wrong, so they didn't have discernment and they were evil. If a person says "God is truth", that is a Right WHAT. If they don't give a HOW/WHY, then it is actually deception.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

Again, the religious leaders of that time initiated an interaction with Jesus. The Pharisees and Sadducees tempted (tried/tested) Jesus by asking for a sign. They wanted a miracle as a cause. We have seen throughout the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus did miracles as an effect, that is, in response to a need. Doing a sign as a cause would be a false sign.

Commentary · verses 2-3

Jesus said to them that they could discern the signs of the weather but not of the times. The question that was implied was: how could they understand physical things, yet not understand spiritual things? Spiritual things are supernatural, they are based on the natural and something more. If a person can't understand the natural, they cannot understand the spiritual.

Commentary · verse 4

Again, Jesus stated they would only be given the sign of Jonah as He did in Matthew 12:40.

Matthew 6:1-6

Chapter

Changes this passage only. Set your default for every passage.

1Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

2When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

5And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Commentary

Jesus showed a Right WHAT with a Wrong HOW/WHY next to the same Right WHAT with a Right HOW/WHY. Jesus called the people who do a Right WHAT with a Wrong HOW/WHY: hypocrites. These people have a Right SAY with a Wrong DO. Their actions prove what they believe and they are Hypocrites because they want justice to be evened out now. These people do not believe that God is Just, because they seek reward on this earth before men. Surely, they have their reward. God cares more about the HOW/WHY than the WHAT, and our reward is based on that point. Imagine if Jesus just told us to give money to our church because you ought to. That would give room for people to make up their own HOW/WHY and it would be justifiable. What if your pastor did that? What if he told you to give without a HOW/WHY? He could be opening his congregation up to acting apart from the Word of God.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-34

The "Sermon on the Mount" continued. In this chapter, Jesus got more specific as to how to intentionally gain Reward.

Commentary · verse 1

Notice, the "reward" Jesus spoke of could not be Salvation. If it was, then "giving in front of others" would cause you to lose your Salvation. When Jesus spoke of "reward," He was speaking of spiritual value/treasure, which we will refer to as Reward.

Revelation 20:12-15 stated there will be two judgments. One will be a Salvation Judgment and will be done according to Righteousness (grace) with one book: the Book of Life. The other judgment will be a Reward Judgment and will be done according to Justice with books. This chapter from Matthew dealt exclusively with the actions that impact the Reward Judgment. Notice the emphasis of Justice throughout this chapter.

Commentary · verse 2

The first example Jesus gave to intentionally gain Reward was to give to the poor. Giving to the poor was a right WHAT. Jesus then explained the wrong HOW (in public) and wrong WHY (have glory from men). Jesus said the result was they get their Reward now. Notice, this was not a sin. It was the same as when Cain gave his offering to God in Genesis 4.

Commentary · verses 3-4

Notice, this was the same right WHAT: giving to the poor. However, Jesus gave the right HOW/WHY to give to the poor: do it in secret so you can be rewarded by God. This was the same as when Abel gave his offering to God in Genesis 4.

Commentary · verse 5

The next example Jesus gave to intentionally gain Reward was prayer. Right WHAT: pray. Wrong HOW and wrong WHY: in public to be seen of men.

Commentary · verse 6

Jesus gave the same right WHAT (pray) with a right HOW/WHY: in secret to be rewarded by God. Notice, entering the inner chamber and shutting the door was analogous to being buried: being out of sight. Jesus' burial allowed us to gain Reward.

Closing Thoughts

Truth is a Right WHAT with a Right HOW/WHY

Deception is a Right WHAT with a Wrong/No HOW/WHY

Let's say you have two WHAT's in front of you and both look right. Let's say you didn't have a whole slew of information in front of you. What if two pastors presented totally opposite information, but both seemed right? How would you be able to differentiate between which is right and which is actually wrong? We will learn about the tool that will help us in the next Doctrine!
