Doctrine #13: Causality

Doctrine #13 Read

When you hear someone say, "Everything happens for a reason," they are saying that there is a cause. "The reason I am sad is because of this..." "I got fired because..." "My wife and I are disconnected because..." Anytime someone says because, or gives a reason, they are saying there is a cause!

Overview

Every specific cause results in one specific effect. The cause is the HOW/WHY and the effect is the WHAT. However, there are many possible causes that could result in the same effect. The same WHAT can have more than one HOW/WHY. Causality is a God-given principle, not a man-made principle.

Discussion Question

Do you believe God wants you to focus on the cause or the effect?

6But let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

9And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

6Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Commentary

Sowing is the cause and reaping is the effect. This passage shows that someone who does not believe in cause and effect is deceived and mocks God.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 6-7

Verse 7 spoke directly toward causality. Denying causality is mocking God because it implies that God is not the First Cause.

Commentary · verse 8

Paul gave examples of causality: sow into your flesh and you will reap corruption; sow into the Spirit and you will reap eternal life.

Commentary · verse 9

You will not get worn out from doing good to others if you have a correct understanding of causality and Justice.

Matthew 7:17-18

17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Commentary

Jesus used causality in this example. A child could understand this point. Jesus was saying that the tree was the cause and the fruit was the effect.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-29

Chapter 7 concluded the "Sermon on the Mount."

Commentary · verses 17-20

Jesus concluded this section by stating that those false prophets would produce bad fruit and justly end up in eternal torment. Notice, Jesus said nothing about believers judging false prophets. None of us believers are able to send a false prophet to eternal torment, so why do some people think this passage allowed believers to judge others? Worse: a person who thinks he can judge false prophets based on this passage would be talking and acting as if he believes he is God, because God was the one who "hews down and casts into the fire"!

Proverbs 26:1-2

1As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, So honor is not seemly for a fool.

2As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, So the curse that is causeless alighteth not.

1As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

2As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Commentary

A curse will not randomly occur, there is a cause. The cause of honor is from someone being honorable (wise). The effect of people being fools is that they behave foolishly (absence of wisdom).

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verse 1

A fool did not even recognize the value in honor. A fool was without understanding.

Commentary · verses 2-3

Fools were compared to animals that needed a physical correction to get their attention.

22Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be carried forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings; and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.

23And they shall comfort you, when ye see their way and their doings; and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord Jehovah.

22Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.

23And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.

Commentary

God specifically stated we ought to be comforted when we know God works according to causality. We ought to be comforted in knowing that our actions caused God to respond to us, and the way He responds to us is not random.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 12-23

Verses 12-23: judgment on the land.

Commentary · verse 22

Circumstances were bad, however, God would still save a remnant.

Commentary · verse 23

God did all of this with a cause...for a specific reason. He was Just. Remember, the people of that time did not see the prophecies occur in their lifetimes. God had already told the people He would have these prophecies occur during their lifetime so they would know Jehovah was God. In this verse, God stated the same reason: This judgment ought to comfort people that Jehovah was God because all of this was not being done randomly, but according to a purpose.

29And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

30And he turned away from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.

29And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

30And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

Commentary

King David was focused on finding the cause. He was one of the greatest kings of all time, and this was right before he killed Goliath. David understood causality, and when he was treated poorly without a stated cause he intentionally looked for the cause!

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-58

This chapter covers the famous story of David and Goliath.

Commentary · verse 29

David wanted to know the cause of what he had done that would have resulted in his brother's projection on, and judgment of, him. Again, David was a master of words.

Commentary · verse 30

Eliab and everyone else rebuked David and then did not answer his questions. David continued to be experiencing a battle with words, from the soldiers of his own nation! Perhaps Eliab and the rest of the soldiers were in condemnation because of their own lack of courage and displaced this pain onto David. David accumulated spiritual value because he handled this abuse well.

Commentary · verses 31-32

Eventually, David's words were stated so many times, soldiers were able to restate them to Saul. Saul sent for David. David told Saul that he would fight. David recognized the cause was in the heart.

46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Commentary

Jesus asked God WHY. Jesus was looking for a cause from God. Do you ask God why you are going through the situations you are going through, or do you supply your own reason?

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 46-51

Jesus gave up His life willingly. No one took it. He held out until sundown Passover. Jesus cried with a loud voice and gave up His spirit and then the veil of the temple was torn in two. The veil was what separated man and God. Jesus' death bridged this gap.

1But Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

3And as he journeyed, it came to pass that he drew nigh unto Damascus: and suddenly there shone round about him a light out of heaven: 4and he fell upon the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

1And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

2And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

3And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

4And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Commentary

Jesus asked Saul/Paul for the cause for why Saul/Paul was persecuting Jesus. Jesus was looking for the cause and looking for Saul to name the cause.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 1-2

Saul went to the high priest and desired letters that would give him permission to bring any people of "the Way" (believers) in Damascus bound to Jerusalem.

Commentary · verse 3

On his way to Damascus a light from heaven shone around him.

Commentary · verse 4

Saul fell to the ground and heard a voice ask "why are you persecuting me?" The voice said "Saul" twice.

Matthew 18:4-6

Chapter

4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me: 6but whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea.

4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

6But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Commentary

Humility like a child is a cause and being the greatest in the kingdom is an effect. Jesus looks at our causes. If you cause a little one to stumble, you are better off at the bottom of the sea. Your actions determine how Jesus will respond to you.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 2-4

In verse 2, "little child" was translated from the word meaning baby. Some people misquote these verses as Jesus saying, "Unless you have the faith of a little child..." The verse stated the attribute was humility. Those who are humble as a child will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Humble meant being willing to consider any perspective, including that you could be wrong. Grace (the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life) only leads to Salvation in those who are humble. The opposite of humility is pride. James 4:6 stated God resisted the proud, but gave grace to the humble.

Commentary · verses 5-7

Notice, Jesus stated that those who put a stumbling-block in front of others were cursed.

25But this cometh to pass, that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

25But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

Commentary

Jesus stated that He was hated without a cause. The people's lack of understanding and wisdom led them to kill Jesus. Does our generation act the same way as these people?

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 23-25

Doctrine: The religious leaders were unjust in their persecution of Jesus. Jesus referenced Psalm 69:4. Notice, Jesus was persecuted because of what He allowed God to do through Him towards others. Jesus was adamant throughout His time on earth that He only did what the Father told Him to do, that He did nothing of Himself. God flowed through Jesus to love the religious leaders of His time by helping them kill their flesh. However, the religious leaders in the flesh wanted to displace their pain and justified their actions by blaming Jesus (God's vessel) instead of the real source (God). The result was they persecuted Jesus without a just cause, which resulted in an infinite amount of fruit through Justice. Likewise, our being unjustly persecuted because we allow God to flow through us to others is an example of being profitable that is painful to our flesh.

25Smite a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; And reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

26He that doeth violence to his father, and chaseth away his mother, Is a son that causeth shame and bringeth reproach.

27Cease, my son, to hear instruction Only to err from the words of knowledge.

28A worthless witness mocketh at justice; And the mouth of the wicked swalloweth iniquity.

29Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And stripes for the back of fools.

25Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

26He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

27Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

28An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

29Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Commentary

If you look at the entire Book of Proverbs it was written according to causality. We do not randomly become wise, get understanding, or acquire knowledge.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 22-25

Showing those with understanding where they were wrong would give them more understanding.

Commentary · verses 26-27

If you are not going to use the understanding you have to affect your actions and continue to go against these words, why are you hearing understanding in the first place?

4Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: As for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him, 5Come, eat ye of my bread, And drink of the wine which I have mingled.

6Leave off, ye simple ones, and live; And walk in the way of understanding.

7He that correcteth a scoffer getteth to himself reviling; And he that reproveth a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

8Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate thee: Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

10The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

11For by me thy days shall be multiplied, And the years of thy life shall be increased.

12If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself; And if thou scoffest, thou alone shalt bear it.

13The foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knoweth nothing.

4Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

5Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

6Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

7He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

8Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

11For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

12If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

13A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

Commentary

Correcting a scoffer will result in him hating you. Correcting a wise man will result in him loving you. Not every effect is from the same cause. Here's an example: Not everyone who hates you after being corrected is a scoffer and not everyone who loves you after being corrected is a wise man; they could be something other than a scoffer or a wise man. Just because someone loves you doesn't make them wise, and just because someone hates you doesn't make them a scoffer. This example is a complex causality Doctrine that we will be discussing in a later Doctrine.

Swokowski Bible Commentary on this passage

Commentary · verses 4-6

"Leave off, ye simple ones" meant to forsake the foolish. We ought to leave behind foolishness and progress in and towards understanding.

Commentary · verses 7-8

A wise man loved being confronted. This man would understand the value of being shown why he was wrong. When you are shown why you are wrong you have the opportunity to become more right. Remember, every time David was confronted with his sin, he chose to humble himself and grow.

Commentary · verse 9

Here we see that the wise became more wise when they were instructed/corrected. Also, teaching the righteous led to them becoming more righteous. The key words here were "instruction" and "teach":

  • "Instruction" was being shown HOW/WHY you were wrong.
  • Being taught meant you were given understanding.

Commentary · verse 10

Before you could receive wisdom from God, you must fear (revere) Him. The first cause was to see God as greater than yourself, which was humility of yourself and worship of God.

Commentary · verses 11-12

We are accountable for our own actions and will be judged according to them, both good and bad.

Commentary · verses 13-18

More examples of a woman attempting to take a man without understanding off course. Are you convinced of the importance of wisdom and understanding yet?

Closing Thoughts

The entire Bible was written according to causality. Causality is a God-given principle. Man does not want to believe in causality because he wants to be able to do what he wants without being responsible.

Causality will be misinterpreted if the causes are seen as effects and/or the effects are seen as causes. If we flip cause and effect we will be deceived. Animals and the devil know about causality; they have knowledge. Man wants to ignore it, but God wants us to embrace causality because we have a responsibility to plant and He can help produce good fruit!
